Beverly Batson

Beverly first stepped onto her bridge of life on October 14, 1943 in Denver, Colorado. She was the fourth child born to Annie Maxine Smith and Ben Eddy Green. She quickly became the family darling as the first girl in the family. The first tentative steps on her bridge were fashioned while surrounded by friends and family. They were further firmed and shaped when she attended and graduated from Manual High School here in Denver. She would later become a medical assistant and work in the home care industry. But her crossing of the bridge was to be guided by the three Great "G's" which would enter, define, illuminate and dominate the remainder of her life. One of the first significant steps in crossing her bridge of life occurred on November 27, 1968 as Beverly committed to the first of the three Great G's when she and the Great Love of her Life, Donald R. Batson were united in holy matrimony at Denver, Colorado. This bonding of the heart would remain firm and strong for 46 years. But as great and as important as this step would prove, there was yet another which came to order her steps, moved her forward and shaped her life. In May of 1972 this loving couple committed themselves and their lives to God when they joined the Church family here at the then Union "Missionary" Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor A.L. Bowman. Here she met the second and most important "G" of her life. A "G" that would come to guide her steps from that day forward as they both came to play important roles in the church. He accepted the role of Deacon, and she became the President of the Junior Mission Auxiliary. In 1978 they were led by the Holy Spirit to join with Pastor William C. Palmer, Sr. in his new endeavour as Pastor of Saint Thomas Baptist Church. She again accepted the role of Adult Teacher of Sunday School and Bible Studies as they further committed to God and to each other. In April of 1986 she accepted the title and role of First Lady of the church when the then Pastor was led to another flock in another field and Deacon Donald became Pastor Donald. Beverly was not just a title. She was admired and acknowledged by all as a great teacher of the Word of God. She was active in all phases of work in her church. She even attempted to sing in the choir. However after her Microphone was "accidentally" cut off every time she sang, she finally knew that the choir could do without her humble efforts. Her tireless effort to bring and explain the Gospel complimented the third "G" in her life which she never neglected to tend. These were her Grandchildren. Her ready wit and ever present bright smile will be treasured. They all have fond memories of Grandma Bev as she nourished and anchored the ever expanding Clan. All have fond memories of the meals that she prepared for the family gatherings on Sundays and Holidays. Truly all will miss her Sweet Potato Pies prepared with skill and love as she provided a rock solid anchor for the family group. Her love was never questioned and her discipline was ever present. One Grandson recalled how he had transgressed in some very small way through no fault of his own, and Grandma Bev quickly administered a dose of discipline with a switch. She felt so badly about it that he reported that she gave him candy in an effort to make up. After a fourteen year battle with a protracted illness, she neared the other side of her bridge. Though her final steps were frail and sometimes hard, she never faltered in faith, nor failed to continue to serve God. In her final hours on this side of heaven, she was surrounded and attended by family and friends. Beverly peacefully reached the other side of the bridge on January 17, 2014 in the early morning hours. The battle fought, the race run. During these final steps she was surrounded, loved, encouraged and comforted by the three Great "G's" of her life— her GOD, her GREAT LOVE and her GRANDKIDS. She was preceded in death by her parents Annie M. and Eddy Green, Brothers Lonnie, Manual Lee, Chucky and Sister Joyce. Those left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband Rev. Donald R. Batson; Son Randell Green; both of Denver. Her "children" Lynn Batson Davis; Donald R. (Brenda) Batson, Jr; Debra Batson; Tequea S. (Marcus) Diaz; all of Aurora. Brothers John W. Green; and Kevin Scot; both of Denver; 3 other Grandchildren; 15 Great Grandchildren; 1 Great Great Grandchild; the Light of the World Praise and Miracle Church Family; and a host of other relatives and friends.
