Willie Lee Potts was born in Ruston, Louisiana on May 7, 1932. He was the oldest of eight children and embraced the role of provider, confidant and leader of his family. On July 12, 1956, he was joined in holy matrimony to Gloria Dean Deloney Potts, this union lasted until Gloria's home going on March 29, 2002. Four children were born from this union, Gregory, Connie, Willie and James. "Potts", as he was lovingly called, was an active member of Allen Temple Baptist Church, Oakland, CA. There he grew in grace and served as a faithful member. Having come from very humble beginnings, Willie had a work ethic like no other. He worked multiple jobs at once, to provide for his family. This was testament of his work that followed him throughout life. Willie worked for Kaiser Aerospace for 20 years and later retired from Bay Area Rapid Transit after 25 years of dedicated service. He carried himself in a way that people wanted to know who he was; if you met him once you remembered him for life. Potts would want to be remembered as a responsible person, an excellent provider, and a spiritual giving man. Potts would always say "if you are fortunate enough to have been blessed, then you should give back and help pull someone else up by the boot strap." He believed that education and being a role model for your children was very important, and essential to being a productive member of society. As Willie made a transition in his life he began to pursue some of his personal passions; emerged was the man that he will be most remembered as, one with an "impeccable" sense of style and dress. Though he loved to dress he would always remind you that the clothes did not make the man, it's the man that make the clothes. Willie was a dreamer; if he could dream it he believed he could achieve it. There were no limitations that he placed on himself nor would he allow anyone to place limitations on him. Willie found love again and was joined in holy matrimony to Evelyn Clemons Potts in January of 2004. This chapter of his life brought sheer joy and unconditional love for each other. Willie treated Evelyn as a queen which brought joy to her children. As a result of this he was accepted and loved as a father by Phillip, Alonzo, Sandra & Melissa. Evelyn was his caretaker, loving companion, friend, and devoted partner. According to the will of the Lord, Willie was called home from his labor to reward on March 10, 2014. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lealer Scott; and brother, Wilbert Potts. Forever cherishing his precious memory include his loving wife, Evelyn Potts; his legacy lives on in his children, Frances Melfort, Elaine Dumas, Gregory and his wife Karen Potts, Connie and her husband Robert Harris, Willie Terry Potts, James Potts, Phillip Clemons, Alonzo Clemons, Sandra Clemons and Melissa Clemons.; forever remembering their Papa, his grandchildren, Anitra Melfort, Edward Melfort, Akeisha Melfort, Tolana Melfort, Shanic Melfort, Franceane Melfort, Sharee Wooten, Ashanti Johnson, Marquita Tomesek, Jevon Potts, Lauren Potts, Jamayne Potts, Ashley Harris, Symone Harris, Michiah Potts, Ahijah Potts, Isaiah Potts, Azzlyn Potts, Christian Kaplan Potts, and Davis Harris; holding close to their heart fond memories are his siblings, Jimmy Thompson, Virginia Potts, Alice Scott, Johnny Scott, Percy Scott and James Scott; along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
