Wendell Lewis, Sr. was born on June 16, 1949, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to his parents, Bennie Lewis and Ella Turner Lewis. He was the tenth child born in the family. He was raised surrounded by his brothers, Curtis, Bennie, Jackie and his sisters, Charlie Mae, Lillie Mae, Hazel, Ionia, Delores and Cassandra. As a child, he enjoyed playing outside with his siblings and neighborhood friends. Wendell received his formal education in Milwaukee where he graduated from North Division High School. On October 23, 1968, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. He was stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. While serving his country, Wendell earned a National Defense Service Medal. He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged at the rank of a Sergeant (E5). On May 23, 1980, Wendell united in holy matrimony to the former Wanda Bellamy. They first met in when they both lived in Milwaukee. To this union, Chanta, Kaleena and Wendell, Jr. were born. Wanda fondly remembers him as great husband and father. His children remember their dad as always there when they needed him. His love for them was unconditional and he was never judgmental. He was later blessed with two grandchildren, Uriah and Zivah who were an additional source of joy and pride in his life. They fondly called him "Poppa" and fondly remember him taking them out for ice cream. They also remember him dancing to his favorite music, playing with them outdoors and taking them for rides in his big truck. The family shared many happy and precious moments together. By profession, Wendell was an over the road Trucker. He was employed by Voyager Express. He is remembered as being hard working, dependable, and always having a smile. He worked well with others and was respected by Co-workers and Supervisors. Wendell was a fun-loving man who enjoyed life and those he encircled. In his free time, he enjoyed the special time spent with family and friends. His closest friends, Donald Smith, Ronald Smith and Nathan Pryor, will miss the camaraderie's they all shared together and the fact that he was true and trusted friend. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful man, who leaves a legacy of love and void that can never be filled. Wendell Lewis, Sr. departed this life on February 22, 2017, in Park City, Utah. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include two daughters, Chanta D. Lewis and Kaleena P. Lewis; one son, Wendell Lewis, Jr. all of Denver, CO; two brothers, Bennie (Annette) Lewis of Milwaukee, WI and Jackie (Rosa) Lewis of Dermont, AR; two grandchildren, Uriah J. Tinianow and Zivah J. Lewis both of Denver; his former wife, Wanda Lewis of Aurora, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
