Virginia Nell Hysaw Hurd was born on September 7, 1934, in Luling, Texas to her parents, Lewis Hysaw and Alzora French Hysaw. She was the first child born in the family. She was raised surrounded by her brothers, Vernon, Joe, Charles, McArthur, Earl, James and her sisters, Gail, Annabell, and Maxine. She received her early education by graduating from Luling High School in 1949. She furthered her education by attending Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas. In January of 1954, Virginia wed Harrison Hurd after relocating to Denver, Colorado. To this union, Vernon, Denise, Jeanette, Carolyn, Franklin, and Cathy were born. They all remember the family trips to Texas during the 4th of July, her cooking lessons, watching sports, and all the wisdom and knowledge she passed on to them. She was later blessed with eleven grandchildren, who all were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. They too have many happy and memorable moments of special time shared together. By profession, Virginia was employed as a Deputy Sheriff for the City and County of Denver. She was hardworking, dedicated and respected by her co-workers and supervisors. She was a woman who believed in working hard to achieve excellence. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse and was the owner of a local eatery. Virginia was a woman with an entrepreneurial spirit and superior excellence. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Virginia accepted the Lord as her personal savior at a very early age. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church for over twenty years. She believed in the power of prayer and that everyone needed to have a relationship with the Lord. She was also a member of Holy Spirit Baptist Church. Virginia was a fun-loving person who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she enjoyed watching Jeopardy, playing bid-whiz and spades. She loved visiting the flea market, down home cooking, working crossword puzzles and her early morning conversations. Her closest friends, Helen Biggers, Rodesha Simmons and Sister Hester will miss the camaraderie's they all shared together and the fact that she was true and trusted friend. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and generous woman who leaves a void that can never be filled. To know Virginia was to love her.
