Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” - Buddha Tariq Abd-el Malik a.k.a Robert Knox was born July 20, 1938 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the third child to the late Hozie and Ida T Knox. He was raised in St. Louis alongside his older brothers James and Ossa Knox, and his younger sisters Dorothy Williams and Vivian Whitsel. At the age of 17 he joined the army, and was honorably discharged on December 19th, 1957. Tariq had a deep love for learning, with books on everything from science to gardening. He attended Lee College in Baytown, Texas receiving an Associate degree in Applied Science on May 19th, 1982. After finishing school, he found his way back to St. Louis, Missouri. Here he met Cassandra Jackson, and in 1989 had his first daughter Dominique Malik. He eventually made his way out to Colorado to be closer to his other brothers and sisters. He met Jennifer Scranton, and in 1997 had his second daughter Brittney Malik. All through his life he was curious about spirituality. He was raised as a Christian, but found solace in the ways of the Muslim and Buddhist religions. During his studies of the Muslim religion he changed his name from Robert Knox, to Tariq Abd-el Malik on July 19th, 1983. In his later years, he would use the Buddhist traditions to get more in tune with his soul. This included mediation and the practice of Tai-Chi every morning. He also studied multiple martial arts forms, and this kept him pretty fit up to the day he died. Tariq loved to talk about anything and everything, to everyone who would listen. He had a need to share all his knowledge with the rest of the world. He had so much energy that just him being in the room would bring your mood up. Tariq left this world to go on to the next on October 3rd, 2017. He was preceded in death by his mother; Ida T. Knox, his younger sister; Vivian Whitsel, and two older brothers; James and Ossa Knox. He is survived by two daughters; Dominique and Brittney Malik, and one younger sister; Dorothy Williams. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
