Sylvester Dewberry, also known as "Hood" was born on January 24, 1942, to his parents, Euester Dewberry and Elvie Crayton Dewberry in Athens, Texas. He was raised in a family with many siblings; Sylvester was the eldest boy, and loved his siblings, Ruthie, Gracie "GiGi", Joslyn "Josh", Jackie, Joe Phillip, Felton, and William Scott. They enjoyed their small-town childhood. As a young man, he was known to be inquisitive and hardworking; as he got older, he developed a strong love for books, and reading became his favorite past time. Hood received his associate's degree in Organic Chemistry soon after finishing high school. Shortly after, he joined the United States Air Force for four years, and was honorably discharged. Hood relocated to Colorado in the 1970's. He worked for the US Postal Service for over 20 years. He later went to work for Eagle Claw and Ice-O-Matic in Denver from where he retired. He was a hard and dependable worker. Everyone that he worked with knew him for his smile. Hood was the proud father of one daughter, Rene Dewberry and two sons, Raymond Self and Brian Self. He loved his children very much. After meeting his life time close friend, Loyce Drumgo-Loper, Hood played a father-figure role to her five children, Nakia Drumgo, Qiana Kelley, Kimberly Jefferson, Eddie Kelley and Shamika Kelley, raising them to be respectful and intelligent individuals. He made sure that Shamika graduated and he showed them all unconditional love. Hood was later blessed with grandchildren, and great grandchildren to fill his life with even more joy; nearest and dearest were his top three, Nakia, Ashaun, and Khalil. Hood was affectionately called "Grandpa" by all the kids that he came across. Hood was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan and would rout for them; he was most happy when they would go against the family rival, the Denver Broncos in the 1990's. Hood was full of love and made sure to spread knowledge to all those around him. His special friend, Janice "Grasshopper" Robinson, will miss the time they shared. He loved for people to make him greens, okra, pecan pie, beans, and pig feet; he loved to eat! He will truly be missed!
