On December 22, 1951, Martin Phillips was born to William and Betty Phillips in Hutchinson, Kansas. He was the fourth of nine children. Martin has five brothers: George, Rupert, Elvis, Major, and Charles. He had three sisters: Linda, Judy and Willette. The family moved to Wichita, Kansas where Martin received his formal education. While in school, he had many friends as he had a very friendly and warm personality. He liked to dress even then and used to sneak his "dress clothes" to school in a bag and change into them when he got to there. (That's until his "Mama" found out!) In 1970, Martin graduated from Wichita High School East. After graduation, he moved to Denver, Colorado. In 1975, Martin accepted his calling to the ministry under the leadership of the Late Bishop L.A. Jordan. In 1978, he met his "soon to be" wife, Joyce Hale, and they were married in 1979 at the Campbell's Memorial Church of Christ. They continued to serve there as faithful and dedicated members of the church. When his season at Campbell's Memorial was over, Minister Phillips continued as a faithful servant of God at All Nations Church of God In Christ where Bishop P. H. Porter was his shepherd. During his sixth year of service at All Nations, Minister Phillips received his pastoral calling and was ordained an Elder. With the blessing of his pastor and spiritual father, Bishop P. H. Porter, Elder Martin Phillips was released into the vineyard. On June 5, 1988, Divine Love Christian Center Church of God In Christ was founded and established in Aurora, Colorado with six members. The Bible says to despise not the day of small beginnings." Pastor Martin Phillips worked the ministry as though the church was overflowing because he believed God as His Word. Divine Love was founded on the principle of St. John 15:13, "Greater love hath no man than this; that a man lay down his life for his friends." In September 2011, Pastor Martin H. Phillips, Sr. was installed as Superintendent of the Divine Love District. He was called to a greater work and willing to accept the challenge. His ministry was based on love; love to God and love of God's people. Everything he did was based on his capacity to love God's people with his whole heart. During the course of Superintendent Phillips life's work, he perfected two essential principles, "How to love," and How to forgive." He became an excellent example of both. He loved God with all of his heart, soul, and spirit. In his final days, he suffered much; but did so without complaints. He was a true soldier in God's Army. He spent every day trying to please the Lord. He finished his course as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. On July 2, 2013, Superintendent Martin H. Phillip, Sr. was called home to be with the lord from labor to reward. He leaves to cherish his memory and to mourn his loss; his wife of 34 years, Joyce Phillips of Aurora; his children, Marti (Alphonso) Hawkins, Martin (Tongia) Phillips, Jr., Marqece Phillips, J. Alan Warfield, Michael (Stacy) Hale, Anthony (Kathryn) Hamilton, Maria Kincannon; his grandchildren, Julian, Alex, Jasmine, Baylee, Briana, Jeanne, Jasmine, L'zjae, Legenae, and the Divine Love family.
