A SERVANTS JOURNEY
Superintendent Chester Lynn Maxwell
Superintendent Chester Lynn Maxwell, a beacon of faith and service, was born on January 6, 1953, in Burnett, Texas, to Mervene and Odell Maxwell. His journey through life was marked by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, as evidenced by his achievements at Pala Duro High School in Amarillo, where he thrived academically. He furthered his education at Compton Junior College in California, earning an associate degree in general studies, before attaining his bachelor’s degree in Black Studies and World History from Cal-State Dominguez University.
His return to Denver allowed him to enrich both his education and his passion for family, especially as he sought to rekindle his cherished relationship with his mother. It was in Denver that he found a spiritual home, first at Campbell Memorial Church of God in Christ and later at Evangelist Temple under the guidance of Superintendent J. L. Washington, who became an influential figure in his life. In 1977, Chester united in matrimony with Ms. Bertha Sanford, a relationship built on love and shared commitment until her passing in 2004.
In his later years, Chester found love again with Missionary Cynthia Singleton, marrying her in 2008. Embracing his pastoral calling, he became the Pastor of Evangelist Temple in 2010, believing wholeheartedly in the mission to serve others. In 2012, guided by divine inspiration, he founded Souls Harbor Community Outreach Church of God in Christ, beginning a journey of compassion that would see him touch countless lives. Chester was dedicated to uplifting those in need, particularly through initiatives that brought joy to children during the holidays through partnerships with local shelters and community organizations.
His leadership extended to the Central District as Chairman in 2013, and in subsequent years, he embraced roles within the Northeast District, culminating in his appointments as Assistant.
Beyond his pastoral duties, Chester was a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys and relished his time watching Westerns and staying informed about the world through the news. Despite facing challenges, including a devastating church fire in 2022, he continued to labor for his faith community until the end of his days, passing away on December 4, 2024.
Superintendent Chester Lynn Maxwell’s spirit continues to shine brightly in the lives he transformed and the love he freely shared.
Chester’s legacy carries on in the hearts of those he inspired and served. He is preceded in death by his father, Odell Maxwell; his first wife, Bertha Maxwell; his mother, Evangelist Missionary Mervene Cannady; his stepfather, Deacon Carl Cannady; his grandparents; a brother; a sister; and a nephew.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Cynthia Marie Maxwell; his children, Aisha, Chase, KeTurah, and Andrew; a sister; several brothers; a brother-in-love; and twelve grandchildren, alongside a cherished circle of family, friends, and a devoted church community.
