Susie Mae Brown was born on August 18, 1922, to Ethel and Monroe J. Brown, Sr. in Bastrop, Louisiana. She was blessed with two siblings, sister, Donna Mae; Bradley and brother, Monroe James Brown, II. “Sue”, as she was so affectionately called, studied education and received her bachelor’s Degree in Library Science, and then her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. While an undergrad, Sue pledged in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, “AKA.” Later, she became an active lifetime member of the sorority. As a young adult, Sue married Bristol Creech, together they had two daughters, Rhonda and Vickie. Later, this marriage was dissolved. Sue loved her children and nurtured them through the good and the difficult times. After a while, Sue met and married Utenart Pippins, and in 1963, the family moved from St. Louis, Missouri to Denver, Colorado. The family had many happy and memorable moments together. Utenart Pippins passed away leaving his wife and family behind. In 1986, Sue married John F. Guess. They were the ideal couple and loved one another very much. Sue converted her religion to Episcopalian. This is where she and John were active members of Holy Redeemer Episcopal Church in Denver. Sue believed in family and education. Those were the essential ingredients of life for her. A teacher, mentor, instructor, lover of knowledge and education, Sue taught in the St. Louis, Missouri Public Schools and Denver Public Schools districts for 45 years. She was known for her love for knowledge and educating those who surrounded her. If it wasn’t about family, then her life would have had no meaning. She was the matriarch, the foundation, and the backbone of the family. Her kindness, generosity, and insight on life made her who she was. Sue was an honored and respected woman. Her warmth and dear heart spread joy to everyone she encountered. She had a kindred spirit that emanated from deep within her. She loved to entertain; family and friends enjoyed her presence. Sue’s home was always warm and inviting, and the holidays at her home were exceptional. Sue had a second calling; she was an amazing cook and vegetable gardener. She could cook anything from scratch. “If Sue would have pursued the restaurant business, she would have made fortunes.” She chose education instead Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Utenart Pippins; her parents; her sister, Donna Mae Bradley; and brother, Monroe James Brown, II. Sue was surrounded by her family and friends during her transition. On October 2, 2017, in Denver, Colorado, with a glow on her face, Susie Mae Pippin-Guess departed from this life in to eternity. Sue will always be remembered as a loving mother to her daughters, Rhonda Creech and Vickie Creech; her grandsons, Michael Bracken and Kian Foster; and granddaughter, Alicia Stevenson. She is also survived by niece, Linda Charles; nephew, Monroe J. Brown, III; RELATION, Janice Brown and Donna Maria Banks; 12 great grandchildren (one on the way), cousins, other relatives, friends and, last but not least, two sons from other mothers, Al Sherman and James Earl Jones.
