Stewart Army

April 24, 1929 — January 25, 2019

On April 24,1929, in Okemah, Oklahoma, Stewart O. Nero and Ethel Hawkins Nero welcomed their first-born son, Stewart Adell Nero into their family. Stewart was raised with two brothers, Thomas and Reevis and three sisters Anita, Kate, and Zella.

The Nero family found ways to make a life in the small town of Okemah where the children received their primary education. However, there were few opportunities for young African Americans in the south in the 1940's. Stewart joined the United States Army in 1948. He received his basic training in Houston, Texas. He trained as a Medic and served in Viet Nam and Japan along with other assignments in the states. Stewart retired from the United States Army 1972 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received numerous awards, certificates and acknowledgements over his 24 years of service.

In 1954 Stewart met and married Frances Awey in Houston, Texas. To this union two children were born, a daughter Margret and son Coffee Adell Nero. Unfortunately, the marriage ended in divorce.

Stewart was quiet, self-sufficient, and generally a loner. He loved to go fishing and hunting as well as raise rabbits to sell and as a food source. He would never pay anyone to repair anything that he could do himself. He enjoyed spending time with his extended family, collecting odds and ends, and watching sports. In his later years, Stewart lived at Saint Paul Health Center where he enjoyed flirting with the nursing staff.

Stewart was proceeded in death by his parents, Stewart and Ethel Mae Nero, brothers Tommy and Reevis, sisters Anita Jeffries, Kate Moore, and Zella. Left to cherish his memory is his daughter Margret Morgan, son Coffee Adell Nero, one grandson Benjamin Morgan, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family and devoted friend John Davis, Marion, Louisiana.
