The sun rose on the life of Stephen Elnathan Sherman, (known to most as Steve), on Monday, January 10, 1921, at 7:30 p.m., in Akron, Colorado, when he was born to John Sherman and Lillie Baldwin - Sherman. The fifth son of twelve children, he had 9 brothers: Cleon, Robert, James, George, Eugene, Charles, Edward and John Jr., and 3 sisters: Lillie, Carrie and Laura. As a child, Stephen, enjoyed school, sports and learning everything he could from his older siblings. Whenever a new sibling was born, Stephen was chosen to stay out of school for two weeks and help his Mother with the household chores, which included cooking, something he continued to enjoy doing even as an adult. Stephen was educated in the public school system, graduating from Akron High School, Class of 1939. He was very active in High school playing football, basketball participating in the school band and orchestra. He has also a part of the High School Yearbook Staff and in the Boys Glee Club. Stephen enlisted in the United States Army in October of 1942. He served in both the European and Pacific Theaters earning the rank of Staff Sergeant as well as a Sharp Shooter, American Service, European, African, Middle Eastern Service, Asiatic Pacific Service, World War II Victory and Good Conduct Medals. Just before being assigned to active duty in the European Theater, Stephen was united in marriage to Henrietta Baxter - Sherman. After his honorable discharge from the Army, their daughter Sandra Lee Sherman was added to their union. After returning from the service, Stephen briefly worked at the Fitzsimons Army Hospital and the United States Post Office in Denver, Colorado. He then opened Sherman's Creamery with his older brother, Robert. Upon noticing that the teenagers of Denver had no place to just "hang out", he opened a private teenage night club "The Moulin Rouge", for teenagers to dance and socialize on the weekends. After relocating to California, Stephen worked at Kaiser Hospital and finally United Air Lines where he retired in November of 1984. After retiring from United Airlines, he started a for-profit organization, "Sherman Safety Company." He finally followed his passion, as he desired to help hungry and homeless Veterans; he started a non-profit organization called the Dorie Miller Memorial Foundation in honor of his friend and hero Doris "Dorie" Miller. Being retired from United Airlines, Stephen was able to travel freely, using his lifetime passes to fly from coast to coast regularly. His two greatest journeys were to Washington, D.C. to participate in both of President Obama's Inaugural Celebrations. During his many campaign activities on behalf of President Obama, President Obama personally presented Stephen the very rare "Presidential Coin." However prestigious his experience was with the President, his most memorable and favorite journeys include visiting with his family, whom he loved very, very dearly, both young and old, and attending Family Reunions. On December 6, 2004, Steve received a new title from God - Godfather ("Papa") and his joy was unspeakable, when his dear friend, Tracy gave birth to her first child, a son, Elijah. On February 10, 2007 (one month after his 86th Birthday), Steve was again blessed by the birth of his Goddaughter, Hadassah. Steve and his daughter, Sandra, spent many happy hours together seeing the world through the eyes of two very special children. On December 25, 2014, (Christmas Day), The Lord called Stephen Elnathan Sherman home to eternal rest in Van Nuys, California. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Sandra Sherman of Van Nuys, CA; his brothers, Edward (Ruby) Sherman of Aurora, CO, John Sherman Jr. of Denver, CO; his sisters, Lillie (James Sr.) of Centennial, CO, Carrie (Burrell) of Aurora, CO, and Laura of Denver, CO; his sister-in-law Maureen of Denver, CO; his godchildren: Elijah and Hadassah (Tracy) of Sylmar, CA., an uncle and aunt, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
