Shirley Mae Hughes was born to Oressie and Lee Harris on June 17, 1940, and was the youngest of six children. She grew up in Matador, TX where she met and married Floyd Hughes. From that union, they had 5 children: Sharon Edwards, Terry Hughes, Michael Hughes, Sandra Hughes, and Renea Hughes. In 1961, she moved to Denver, CO where she enjoyed a 35-year career in grocery management and, went on to spend 14 more years working with kids with disabilities for Denver Public Schools. She was loved by many of those who came in contact with her, developing life-long friendships that she cherished until the end. A woman of faith in Jesus Christ, Shirley was a dedicated member of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church where she served as the Announcement Clerk and member of the Senior Mission. Her leisure time was spent watching her favorite sports: basketball, baseball, football, spending quality time with her family, as well as satisfying her shopping fetish for buying shoes. Though she was uncomfortable with flying, she enjoyed memorable vacations to GA, TX, and CA over the years. She was also dubbed, “the world’s best cook” by her family. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her passing include her oldest sister Algaree Jones, her two sons Terry and Michael, two daughters Sandra and Renea, her grandchildren Monica, Jovan, Aliyah, and many relatives and friends she admired.
