Shelly Smith was born on August 2, 1963, in Denver, Colorado to her parents, Hayward Hudson and Gracie Washington Hudson. She was the first born in the family. She was raised surrounded by her brother, Marcus and her sister, Alexis. As a child, she enjoyed playing with her brother and sister. She shared a special closeness with her cousins. They often partied together. She carried a glowing smile that would light any room she entered. Shelly received her formal education in Denver, Colorado; where she graduated from Manual High School in 1981. She married Robert Smith. The couple first met when they both were in Smiley Middle School. To this union, Tamera and Deaunta were born. She was a loving and devoted mother whose pride and joy was the care and nurture of her family. Shelly was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when she was a young adult. If asked, she would say that "she was a M.S. survivor." She was able to raise her children in church; she was able to attend their college graduations; and she was a proud grandmother of five grandchildren, Chalaya, Tyree, Tyrell, Charelle and Chaniyah, who were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. They fondly remember all the happy and precious moments they shared together. By profession, Shelly was employed by University Hospital in the Admissions Department. She is remembered as being hardworking, dependable and having a great work attitude. She was always courteous to those she came in contact with. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Shelly was a member of Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church for over nine years. She served the church under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Harold Hicks. She believed in the word of God and she believed He would never leave her alone. She was a strong Christian woman and warrior, who believed in the power of prayer and that everyone needed to have the right relationship with the Lord. Shelly was a fun-loving woman, who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she love watching movies, playing with her children and grandchildren, cooking, eating, and she truly enjoyed the beauty of nature in Colorado. Her closest friends, Darnell Johnson, Francine Gross and Denise Hunter, will miss the camaraderie's they all shared together and the fact that she was a true and trusted friend. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother but most all, she was woman of God. She was the type of person who never met a stranger and was loved by all. Well Done! Shelly, take your rest!! We all loved you but God loved you best. Shelly Smith departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on November 3, 2016, in Aurora, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her children, Tamera R. Smith-Thomas and Deaunta J. Smith both of Denver, Colorado; her brother, Marcus D. Harris of Auburn, Washington; her sister, Alexis S. Hunter of Washington DC; 5 grandchildren, Chalaya Davis, Tyree Thomas, Tyrell Thomas, Charelle Thomas, and Chaniyah Thomas; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins other relatives and many friends.
