With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Shawn Anthony Burnette, who left us far too soon on February 24, 2025, at the age of 37. Shawn was a kind and sensitive soul, known for his deep love of sports, his infectious enthusiasm, and his ability to connect with everyone he met.
Born on July 21, 1987, Shawn’s passion for sports began the moment he could hold a ball. From a young age, he played T-ball and football, continuing both sports through middle school before ultimately choosing baseball as his true passion in high school. He played Little League, traveled with a competitive high school team, and went on to pitch at Trinidad State Junior College, where he threw a no-hitter—one of the proudest moments of his life. His love for the game never faded, as he continued playing in adult leagues well after college. Beyond baseball, he was a true sports fanatic, finding joy in basketball, football, golf, and anything involving competition and camaraderie.
In addition to his love for athletics, Shawn had a wide range of interests. He was an avid snowboarder, spending every weekend in middle school on the slopes with his snowboard group. He also practiced taekwondo in his younger years, earning a black belt, a testament to his dedication and discipline. Music was another part of his life, as he played the saxophone throughout elementary and middle school. Always eager to learn and explore, Shawn even took flying lessons starting at the age of 13, spending a few years pursuing his fascination with aviation.
One of Shawn’s greatest joys in recent months was becoming an uncle to his beloved nephew, Reid Abboud. He was incredibly proud of this role and cherished every moment spent with his nephew, showering him with love and excitement.
Shawn built a career as an assistant store manager at Discount Tire, where he thrived in sales and took pride in helping his customers. He had a natural gift for conversation and made lasting connections with those he served. His warmth and generosity left an impression on everyone who walked through the door.
A man of faith, Shawn attended Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church, where he found strength and community.
He is deeply missed by his loving parents, Janet and Tony Burnette, his sister and brother-in-law, Jylynne and Roy Abboud, and his cherished nephew, Reid Abboud. He also leaves behind his beloved cousins, LaToya (Damien) Hairston, Tailyn Hairston, Martina Burnette, David Lee Good III, Anthony Tracy, along with many more cousins, extended family, countless friends, and teammates who became family.
Shawn’s kindness, passion for life, and unwavering love for sports will live on in the memories of those who knew him. Though his time with us was too short, his impact was immeasurable.
Shawn will forever be in our hearts, remembered not just for the games he played but for the love, laughter, and kindness he shared with the world.
