Sena Rachelle Griffin was born on August 5, 1956, in Kansas City, Missouri to her parents, Stella and Roosevelt Freeman, Sr. She was mainly educated in the Denver Public School system participating in many elected extracurricular activities. While attending East High School, she was involved in ROTC and was a member of the Drill Team, rising to the rank of Major. The Drill Team won the prestigious award of “Commanders Trophy” for overall best drill team in the district for three years in a row. As a member of the Rifle Team, she earned the “expert” medal for shooting. She was also involved in concert choir, angelaires, student council and voted Head girl in her senior year. After graduating, she briefly attended Colorado State University before joining the U.S. Army.
Sena was joined in marriage to Irvin Jerome Crowell (deceased) in 1979 and one child was born of this union, Earvin Anthony Crowell. She married again in 1990 but divorced. No children were born of this union.
Upon joining the military in 1975 as an Air Traffic Controller, she received numerous awards, accolades, and decorations, including NCO of the year at Fort Bragg, N.C. in 1979. Sena made the Army her career for over 20 Years culminating with the position of First Sergeant of an Air Traffic Control Company.
Prior to her active duty retirement in 1996, she attended night school at George Wallace College in Dothan, Alabama and earned her degree in Nursing. As a Registered Nurse, Sena worked in an Emergency Room and Labor and Delivery at Dale Medical Center in Ozark, Alabama. She finally found her niche in Medical/Surgical. After returning home to Colorado, she worked on the 4th floor Medical at Penrose Main Hospital until she retired in January 2015, culminating in the position of Charge Nurse.
Sena was brought up in the Church and became an active member of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Colorado Springs. She was a member of the main choir and Women’s choir. She implemented the Emmanuel-911 (E-911) First Responder Program at the Church. She and her team consisting of RN’s, LPN’s, CNA’s, Paramedics and Firefighters were responsible for rendering first aid to Church members who needed basic medical treatment until advanced medical treatment could arrive. They were also responsible for training and certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Automated External defibrillator (AED).
Sena was always eager to lend a hand and enjoyed helping others in need in any way she could. She was known for her smile and could always brighten up anyone’s day when she showed those “pearly whites.” She loved her family and friends very much and made a difference in everyone’s life she touched. She will be sorely missed.
Sena Rachelle Griffin departed from this life on June 14, 2020. She is preceded in death by her biological father, Roosevelt Freeman, Sr.; her stepfarther, Spencer L. Thompson; and her sister, Michelle "Pip" Sterrett. Those left to cherish her memory include her devoted and loving son, Earvin Anthony Crowell (Nanette), Oxon Hill, MD, mother, Stella M. Thompson, brother, Roosevelt Freeman, Jr., sisters, Lalitta M. Freeman, Kim Y. Lindley (Curtis), Toni M. Green (Donovan), and Cheri L. Scott (Vernie), all of Denver, Colorado, and her “other sister,” Diane E. Williams as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and Friends.
