Salome Chapman Hayden Through her wise words, kindness, consideration, diligence and reverence for God, the family is uplifted. Her children and her husband delight in her and the community at large honors her - Proverbs 31:26-27. Salome Chapman Hayden was born on September 16, 1921, in Newton, Mississippi to her parents, Lemon Chapman and JoAnna Chapman. She was the second of twelve children born in the family. She was raised in a home with strong Christian principles, good work ethics, and parents who believed in the importance of education. She was raised on the family farm in Newton working alongside her mother performing all the duties of making a house a home. It was during this period, that she started to study in preparation of her future education. She accepted the Lord as her personal savior at a very early age and continued to serve the Lord for the rest of her life. Salome received her formal education in Jackson, Mississippi, where she graduated from Lanier High School. She was the first of her siblings to graduate from high school. She furthered her education by attending Jackson State College in Jackson, Mississippi and Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. Salome united in holy matrimony to Reverend Daniel Hayden. They first met in Jackson, MS. To this union, a daughter, they named Dorothy Jean was born. She was a loving and devoted mother whose pride and joy was to care for and nurture her family. Dorothy fondly remembers her mother as coining the phrase "I loveded you bee bee; and her reply would be, I loveded you mother." The love between the two of them was unconditional and never ending. Salome was a driving force in her husband's ministry. As a first lady, she supported him as he pastored five churches in the area building and strengthening the congregations as he spread the message of God to all mankind. She worked closely with the local Ministers Wives and Deacons Wives and was a true prayer warrior. Salome was a member and held office in the Shinning Star Chapter, No. 427, Order of Eastern Star (OES). Founded by her uncle, Most Worthy Patron Walter B. Chapman. She attended and most often spoke at many church functions as well as many civic organizations. She believed the words from a familiar song; "if I can help somebody as I travel along, then my living shall not be in vain." Reverend Hayden preceded her in death in September of 2001. Salome was later blessed with a granddaughter, Staci MaKenzi. She called her "Miss Staci." Another happy and precious moment in her life was the birth of her two great grandsons, Jack and Hunter. They kept her in supply of Peppermint candy always, and shared stories of their activities. By profession, Salome was an Educator. She taught school in the Mississippi School System. She was awarded a Science Fellowship at Bank Street College of Education in New York City. She retired after over 38 years of faithful service. Upon her retirement, she was interviewed by the Newton Record Newspaper and she reflected about how much she loved teaching and helping other organizations. She participated in the National Baptist Convention, State and National Ministers Wives Auxiliaries and the Baptist World Alliance. Salome was a fun-loving woman, who enjoyed life and those she encircled. As a resident of Shalom Park, she was a stately and proper lady, who was jovial and sincere in what she said. She truly loved the interaction with the residents and the staff. She was happy and responsive to all the experiences she shared with her family. Nothing would bring her greater joy than spending quality time with her family. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have met this "Phenomenal Woman." To know Salome was to love her. Those we love remain with us, for love itself lives on, and cherished memories never fade because a loved one's gone; those we love can never be more than a thought apart; for as long as there is memory, they'll live on in the heart. Salome Chapman Hayden departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on May 14, 2017, in Parker, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her daughter, Dr. Dorothy J. Hayden-Watkins of Aurora, Colorado and her husband, Thomas R. Watkins; 2 brothers, Reverend Joe Nathan Chapman of Newton, Mississippi and Deacon Abraham Chapman and his wife, Velma Chapman of Denver, Colorado; her granddaughter, Staci M. Porter-Bentley and her husband, Peter K. Bentley; 2 great grandchildren, Jack Hayden Bentley and Hunter Kjeld Alonzo Bentley all of Aurora, Colorado; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
