Sallie Braswell

October 6, 1937 — November 1, 2014

The precious gift of life began for Sallie Shielda Tynes Braswell on October 6, 1937, in Warwick County, Virginia. She was a great source of joy to her parents, George C. Tynes and Armisha Brown Tynes. She and her only sister, Hester shared many happy and precious moments together. She received her formal education in Newport News and graduated from George Washington Carver High School. Sallie united in holy matrimony to Cannie Braswell shortly after high school. To this union, seven beautiful children Cannie Eugene, Linda, Alvin, Ramona, Theodora, Armisha and Sylvester were born. She was truly a loving and caring mother, whose pride and joy was the care and nurture of her family. She was uniquely able to maintain a special relationship with each of her children, as well as; maintain a strong and family unit. Family was paramount in her life. All who knew her quickly learned that her children were a central focus in her life. This care and concern was extended to many of their friends, as she opened her arms and home to welcome them. Sallie was blessed with seven grandchildren, Ramonda, Justin, Cannie, Jr., Gabrielle, Lakia, Alvin, Jr, Austin and later, three great grandchildren, Jaliyah, Alvin III, and Jaison, who also were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. She often traveled to various states to spend quality time with each of her children and grandchildren. She was affectionately known as the "traveling grandma." Sallie became a volunteer with the Newport News Headstart Program. She truly loved helping others. She later became employed by the Newport News Public School System. She was hard working, dedicated, and performed her duties with a spirit of excellence. She retired after over twenty years of faithful service. Sallie believed in the importance of having Jehovah God in her life. In doing so, she welcomed weekly Bible Study in her home with one of Jehovah's Witnesses. In her study of the bible, she learned that God's Kingdom is the source of lasting happiness. This knowledge resulted in her dedication and baptism as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on February 24, 1974. The words found in Psalms 73:28, took on a special meaning for her; "But as for me, drawing near to God is good for me. I have made the Sovereign Lord Jehovah my refuge." She shared her faith, first of all with her family, leading and teaching them to know and love our wonderful creator Jehovah God and his son, Jesus Christ. She shared this same truth with everyone she would meet. She was a faithful member of the Newport News West Congregation, located in Newport News, Virginia. She always maintained a positive outlook on life, looking to the future with confidence. She had complete faith in Jehovah God's promise at Isaiah 25:8 "He will swallow up death forever." She longed for the day when this promise would become a reality. Sallie was a person who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she enjoyed puzzle books and spending quality time with family and friends. She had many friends that she has been able to stay in close relationship with over the years. She enjoyed traveling and has been able to go on many cruises with destinations ports both foreign and domestic. Sallie had a meek disposition and an infectious smile that would light any room she entered. This positive spirit and attitude continued to be displayed during her illness. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful lady. To know Sallie was to love her. Sallie is preceded in death by her husband, Cannie Braswell, Jr; both parents, George and Armisha Tynes and her sister, Hester James. Sallie S.
