Rosetta J. Greene was born on January 19, 1929 in Blytheville, Arkansas to her parents, Janie Bottoms and Owen Johnston. She was raised with her siblings, Owen Jr, Josephine, Eleanor, Gladys, Catherine, and Clarice, in Monroe, Louisiana. She graduated high school in Monroe and was quite competitive playing on the girl's basketball team while there. After graduation, she moved to St. Louis, Missouri with her sisters Eleanor and Catherine. Clarice moved to St. Louis shortly thereafter.
Rosetta met William O. Woods, Sr, in St. Louis and would marry there. Rosetta and William had eight children. Their oldest child, Adrienne, passed at age 12, from a brief illness. This marriage was later dissolved. Looking to pursue a career and make a better life for herself and her 7 children as a single mother, Rosetta attended and graduated from nursing school. She worked as a nurse at the American Car Foundry in St. Louis. Later, she met and married Elmore Greene. They enjoyed 8 years together until his passing in 1982. Rosetta continued to work 'in the Industry' as a nurse until she retired at the age of 70.
Rosetta was a devout woman of faith and was a member of Central Baptist Church in St. Louis for many years.
In her free time, she loved tending to her roses and all the flowers in her garden at her home of 52 years in St. Louis. She enjoyed spending time with her friends, Mary Johnson and Charlene Bell.
After moving to Denver to live with her son, Kemal and his family in 2016, Rosetta stayed up to date on politics with MSNBC and CNN, loved to watch football and channel surf her favorite tv shows. She enjoyed reading her bible, her many 'Guideposts, Women of the Bible' books and doing her Dot Dot Dot puzzle books everyday. While at assisted living, she had many friends. But her dear friends were Freda Wilson and Kate Sutton. She also enjoyed watching Haystack News, Western TV shows such as the Texan and Walker Texas Ranger, going for daily walks and sitting outside looking at the flowers. Rosetta was close with caregiver Ashley Simmons, who became like family, and whom she loved dearly. And Ashley loved her like a Mom.
Her proudest accomplishment was becoming a grandmother to her loving family. She was affectionately referred to as 'GG' by her great-granddaughter, Janelle. Rosetta will truly be missed.
She is preceded in death by her late husband, Elmore Greene, and seven children, her daughters: Adrienne Woods, Toni Woods (Alvin), Elana Jamison (Larry), Angelique Woods (Marvin Green), Kim Turner (Adolph Sr); her sons: Alexander Ashwood (Etolia), and Andre Woods, Sr. (Lena), granddaughters Tanisha Perry-Presley (Tony) and Mandisa Perry. And 5 siblings.
Rosetta is survived by her son, Kemal Woods Sr., daughter-in-law, Cheryl Linzmaier-Woods, sister, Clarice McClure (Fred); grandchildren, Anitra, Andre Jr., Megan, Debra, Adrienne, Sharronda, Thal, SeSe, Ja'Net, Sheridan, Adolph Jr., Kemal Jr., Elisha, Erica, Ahman and Caron; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
We want to acknowledge and extend our thanks to the staff at Gardens Care Meadow Hills Assisted Living, Garden Terrace Alzheimers Center of Excellence at Aurora, and Berkley Hospice for graciously providing care to Mom. And also to Ashley Simmons, personal caregiver.
