Reverend Young

December 24, 1949 — September 2, 2018

Reverend John J. Young Reverend John J. Young was born in Bridgeton, New Jersey on December 24, 1949. He was the eldest of 10 children born to the union of the late Walter and Christine Young. At the tender age of 11, he accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized at the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Bridgeton, N.J. Reverend Young’s life experiences were rewarding, challenging and self-fulfilling from his early childhood until his heavenly transition . After graduating from Bridgeton Senior High School in June 1968, he worked at a local business, Leone Industry. On January 8, 1969, he was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Flora Ann Weeks. He served in the United States Army from June 1969, until 1971. He was stationed at Fort Dix, Trenton, New Jersey, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, and Fitzsimmons General Hospital, Aurora, Colorado as an Army Medic during the Vietnam War. In 1972, he graduated from the Dick Jones Real Estate College and received his realtor’s license. He was certified by the American Management Association. He pursued his collegiate and theological training at the Denver Seminary, the Institute for Biblical Studies in Denver, the Denver Extension of United Theological Seminary, the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology of Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia, and the Institute for Church Management at Clark University in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his Christian Worker’s Certificate and the Evangelical Teacher’s Training Associate from the Denver Seminary . On December 31, 1978, he was publicly set apart to the office and work of Deacon by the Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Denver, Colorado under Pastor D. M. Survine. He received his Certificate of License in the Gospel Ministry at the Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, Aurora, Colorado on September 5, 1982, under Pastor Barcus Adams. On November 30, 1984, he received the Certificate of Ordination from St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, Denver, Colorado under Pastor Fred Hopson, Jr. In October 1986, he was set aside as the Pastor of New Beginning Missionary Baptist Church in Aurora, Colorado. He pastored New Beginning for 17 years. His first sermon at New Beginning was from the 23rd Psalm on Sunday, August 17, 1986. Reverend Young has worked in many areas of the church: The Brotherhood, as an auxiliary teacher, Sunday school teacher and Superintendent, Associate Minister, Assistant Pastor, Chairman of the Deacon Board, Chairman of the Trustee Board, Youth Counselor, Marriage Counselor, and a Board Member of the Metro Denver Black Church Initiative. For eight years he taught a weekly class at The Crossing, the Denver Rescue Mission’s largest facility for men transitioning from homelessness. Over the decades, he advised several Christian men and women, who went on to establish their own churches in Denver and surrounding areas. He mentored eight ministers; six have pastored their own churches and the other two are now ordained. He was sound in preaching and utilized unwavering commitment to the truth and inerrancy of the Bible. His godly Christian character, genuine warmth, gifted oratory skills, wisdom, and strength were an inspiration to all that knew him. Reverend John J. Young spent over 30 years in the food service distribution industry. His tenure in the food industry encompassed all career paths from transportation and delivery, culminating in sales, management and consulting. He loved fishing, food, football, family and faith. His family enjoyed when “Papa Daddy” was in the kitchen making his famous clam chowder — with him as the master chef and his children serving as the sous chefs. Banana pudding, fried potatoes, lemon pound cake, his daughter-in-law Lisa’s seafood etouffee, Mike and Tony’s grilling, and Flora’s sweet potato and white potato pies were his some of his favorite foods. His favorite pastimes were watching the Denver Broncos play, TV westerns and anything starring Chuck Norris. He could recite every screech and turn from the car chase in his favorite movie, Bullet. Reverend Young also possessed a great sense of humor. During his 15 years of intense battle with prostate cancer, his resolve to love the Lord never wavered. His final sermon to close friends and family gathered at his side, on Saturday, September 1, 2018, was two simple but powerful words, “Trust God.” Reverend John J. Young served the ministry, the community and his family until his homegoing and transition on Sunday, September 2, 2018, at 1:32 p.m. when the heavenly host arrived, to escort him to his eternal rest. He did not let go of his faith! This faithful servant to God Almighty, left to cherish his memories and mourn his loss, his devoted wife of more than 49 years, Lady Flora A. Young, children: Rev. J. Michael (Alicia) Young; Tony A. Young and Teresa A. Young; his grandchildren: John J. Chukwuma Young, Isaac, Precious Kieshon, and Jacob Davis all of Parker, Colorado; his siblings: Tommy, Daniel (Annette Toni), Diane, Walter, Hazel Lorraine, Yvonne, Leon and David Young all of Bridgeton, N.J., and a host of other family, friends and loved ones. Preceding him in death are his parents, Walter Young and Christine Young. We celebrate the life and legacy of Reverend John J. Young! Hallelujah!
