Reverend Morgan, Jr.

January 3, 1934 — June 27, 2016

Reverend Oscar Morgan, Jr. was born in Boley Oklahoma on January 3, 1934, to a loving family and parents, Pastor Oscar Morgan, Sr. and Sadie Brown Morgan. He was the youngest of six boys, Coolidge, Herbert, Booker, Levi, Theodore, and three younger sisters, Elgina, Dorothy and Fletta. As children, each of them accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and each were baptized by their father, who was also their Pastor. The birth order of young Oscar, Jr., permitted him to learn survival skills like cooking right along with his three sisters. From the beginning, he was precocious, but always protected by his five older brothers, he quickly became a fearless force to reckon with when competing or just plain fighting with his buddies. He knew he would be forgiven because he was the baby boy and also his father's namesake. He graduated from Boley High School, and whether playing with his siblings or getting in trouble with his friends, he brought new meaning to the title of, "P K or Preachers Kid." He was a man's man from the beginning, and is still remembered in Oklahoma football history as one of the best running backs. He loved all sports except golf, which he felt was nothing more than adults walking around on grass telling lies and drinking beer. His football skills and agility always found its way to the dance floor as he left onlookers in disbelief because his 225 pound muscular physique did not match his ability to move smoothly across the dance floor with great flair, finesse, and swag. The crowd would agree that "Mr. Twinkle Toes" was in the house, and ready to dance the night away. He followed his brothers to Omaha, Nebraska where they worked together in the booming meat packing industry. One night after work, he stopped by Salem Baptist Church during a choir rehearsal, where he heard his future wife, Sylvia singing a solo. They married and felt blessed to have five children, Shiva, Andre, Oscar III, Melody and Ramon. After joining Salem Baptist Church, pastored by Rev. Dr. J.C. Wade, Sr., he took seriously his responsibility as a Trustee and President of the Usher Board. Just as he began experiencing fatherhood, he was drafted to serve two years in the US Army, and upon discharge, he returned to Omaha and his previous job. He relished his achievements and leadership roles as a Freemason and 32 degree Shriner, and routinely spent long hours teaching and preparing others to be initiated into the brotherhood. He thoroughly enjoyed striking fear in the minds of those facing the initiation process. When Cudahy Packing Company closed operations in Omaha, several of his brothers and he were transferred to Cudahy's Denver Plant. Once in Denver, he joined the Central Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. W.O Mays as the pastor. He quickly became a leader with the Sunday School and Men's Department. After one year at Central Baptist, he announced that he had been called to preach and would follow in his father's footsteps. Both family and friends alike were shocked with the news. And, at the invitation of his former pastor, Dr. Wade Sr., he returned to Salem Baptist Church in Omaha to preach his first sermon. The church sanctuary was packed that Sunday afternoon with his family and stunned "buddies" that came to see if it was true that their pal was really going to preach. When he finished his sermon there was not a dry eye in the building because everyone had witnessed the anointing of God on this most unlikely preacher. Rev. Morgan joined Mt. Gilead Baptist Church to enhance his opportunities to study and preach the Gospel. Under the watchful eye of Rev. Dr. Acen Phillips, he entered Beth Eden Baptist College and flourished as a young preacher. A short time later, he was called to lead a small Denver fellowship that was known as St. Paul Baptist Church. Immediately, he said yes and was joined in Denver by his wife and four young children. Rev. Dr. Wade, Sr. and the Salem Baptist Church Congregation traveled to Denver's Mt. Gilead Baptist Church to install Reverend Morgan as a new pastor. It was a joyful weekend worship fellowship that resulted in a strong bond between the two churches. Within a year and the support of the Southern Baptist Churches of Colorado, Pastor Morgan was invited to merge St Paul Baptist Church with another fellowship known as Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. The two groups met and formally agreed to organize as one church with the name of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. His wife and children were high value musical assets and key components in his Colorado and national ministry. Pastor Morgan enthusiastically led Mt. Sinai Baptist Church to join both the Western States Baptist Convention, and the Northern District Baptist Association. His faithful leadership and participation in these two organizations were followed by his work; as an active member and officer in the Denver Ministerial Alliance and the Baptist Ministers Conference. He loved to attend their gatherings and became an avid participant in all of their national conventions and conferences, including those of the National Southern Baptist Convention. He earned an Associates Degree from Beth Eden Baptist Bible College and a Bachelors and Master's Degree from the Denver School of Theology. Colorado Pastors and Preachers knew about his finger licking barbecue ribs and beef brisket, so they always stopped by for "a plate" that included collard greens and candy yams. Of course, they had to stay a while to enjoy some peach cobbler or sweet potato pie while they solved all problems related to their specific religious denominations. When he fired up his grill in the parking lot at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, the smoke caused both saints and sinners to stop by. Once again, the sound of music caught the ear of Pastor Morgan, and he married Mildred Bates, a great gospel singer and musician, which former wife, Dr. Sylvia Morgan-Smith and he had both known since their early 20's. Their wedding day was a joyful occasion for both families because Pastor Morgan had a wonderful new wife and awesome adult kids, and now, his former-wife Syl had a "wife in-law" and a friend. In addition to their adult children, the newlyweds adopted young twin girls, Amber and April Morgan. Together, with the support of their children, Pastor Morgan and First Lady Mildred Bates Morgan led Mt. Sinai Baptist Church to a deeper place in Christ and a higher place in the Christian church community. Ten years ago, during a kidney transplant surgery with his son, Ramon Morgan as the living donor, Pastor Morgan suffered an unreported and untreated stroke that claimed his sight in one eye. Three months later, he had surgery to remove his thyroid gland, and less than a year later, he lost his wife, Mildred to cancer. His health continued on a downward spiral and although it seemed like things would not get better, he remained faithful to his calling to preach the gospel. In 2011, he retired as Pastor of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church after 40+ years of continuous and committed leadership. He loved the Mt. Sinai Church family and struggled to continue as pastor until his health totally failed. He was pleased to have Pastor Alton Shields, as his successor and son in the ministry. Today, Pastor Morgan has a new body and a new eternal home in glory. He is now reunited with his wife Mildred, his infant son, Oscar Morgan, III, his parents, Pastor Oscar and Sadie Morgan, Sr. and four brothers, Coolidge, Herbert, Booker and Levi Morgan. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Reverend Oscar Morgan, Jr. departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on June 27, 2016, in Aurora, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include his children, Shiva B. (Elbert) Maxey, Deborah Danzie, Andre L (Lucio) Morgan dos Santos, Melody R. (William) Lynch, Ramon F. Morgan, April Morgan, and Amber Morgan; his stepchildren; one brother, Theodore R. Morgan; three sisters, Elgina A. Miller, Dorothy M. Williams and Fletta H. (Dean) James; his devoted former wife/friend, Dr. Syl Morgan Smith; a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; many cousins, other relatives and countless friends. Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
