Rev. Dr. Janice Buckner
Reverend Dr. Janice “Mom Buckner is a proud Denver native” and graduate of Manual High School. She attended Denver University, majoring in music, and has been a member of New Hope Church all her life. Mom was the pianist for the youth group, past director of youth fellowship groups, as well as Sunday school teacher for various ages at her church. She is a former member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers and the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority “Philo” Club. She has served on a multitude of boards and community service organizations.
On Mom’s list of accomplishments are the National Honor Roll of Guild Teachers, and Prayer Warrior. As past PTA president of Barrett Elementary School, she also used her leadership skills to serve as a board member for the East High School Advisory Board. Mom thoroughly enjoyed her work as a wedding consultant for many years and has also been blessed to preside over weddings for many of her young ladies. Mom’s memberships and services include Denver Community Choir, Youth Counselor and Deaconess at New Hope Baptist Church as well as Honorary Pastor at Faith Community Baptist Church.
As an accomplished speaker, Mom has taught many workshops and seminars. Blessed to be married to the late Warren Edward Buckner, God gifted them with 44 years of holy matrimony. Warren was a devoted, Godly man, and from this union came two musically-inclined sons, Roderick Warren Buckner and Ronald Eugene Buckner. She is the grandmother of seven and great grandmother of three.
Janice Buckner received her honorary doctorate Degree of Divinity in 2000. Working as a preschool teacher for Denver Public Schools for 28 years, she mastered the art of skillfully mentoring others. Mom Buckner received the "Nine Who Card Award" in 2003, based on her outstanding outreach to women: she also received the "Unsung Hero Award" from Mayor Wellington Webb in 2003, and was selected as one of Denver Urban Spectrum Magazine's 2008 "African American Who Make a Difference."
Mom Buckner was also pleased to serve as chaplain in the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for many years. It goes without saying that her work as a preschool educator helped her ministry to bloom by leaps and bounds.
Under the guidance of Sister Ruth Hickman, Abundant Word Bible Scholar, Teacher and Mentor from Calvary Temple Ministries for more than 20 years, Mom Buckner received one-on-one instruction regarding how to effectively reach others who desired to know more about The Lord. Based on her many excursions to Kansas and other places, God used Sister Ruth to instruct Mom Buckner how to teach and reach the women of all ages that she would ultimately come to minister to. For almost 50 years, Mom has served as the wonderful, nurturing other mother for a plethora of women of various ethnic backgrounds and is loved by all.
As founder of "Ambassadors for Christ Journey Through Love", a nonprofit organization established in 1984, Mom worked with hundreds of women from all walks of life. Through this organization, she reaches out to women with counseling and prayer at any hour of the day or night. These daughters extend to California, Hawaii, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Texas, Ethiopia, Honduras and of course, Colorado. Although her work is tireless, her prayer life and faith in God sustains her. Obeying God’s commandment that older women must set a high standard and school young women
