Quentin Kelsey Thompson was born Saturday, October 25, 1969 in Detroit, Michigan ~ the 5th son born to Willie and Bobbye Thompson. Bobbye fondly remembers that she and her husband Willie had selected the name, “Quentin Kerry Thompson” for their 5th son. Bobbye gave the paper with the name on it to her husband to give to the nurse, yet when the birth certificate arrived, Quentin’s middle name had been changed from Kerry to Kelsey ~ thus the name Quentin Kelsey Thompson. Quentin relished the fact that among his 4 brothers (Rickie, Samuel, Lawrence and Aaron) he was the “baby” of the family and considered himself “the apple of his mother’s eye.” Quentin gave his life to Christ at an early age. The Thompson family were active members of the First Baptist Church in Inkster, Michigan. Quentin’s education began at Frederick Douglas Elementary School in Inkster, Michigan. His brother Rickie recalls that as a child, Quentin loved to “dress up” and wear his cowboy boots. It was difficult, if not almost impossible to get him to take off the boots. Although Quentin was surrounded by four other brothers, he relished his alone time and could be found playing with his Legos building structures for hours by himself. In 1978 the family moved to Denver, Colorado and Quentin continued his education at Knight Academy Elementary School ~ Martin Luther King Junior High School (where he played football and was an awesome lineman) culminating with his graduation from Montbello High School in 1987. Somewhere along the way, Quentin put his football cleats down and picked up the trumpet, becoming a member of the Denver Citywide Marching Band. Quentin showcased his musical talent in numerous Christmas performances, and on multiple trips to the West Coast. Quentin often thanked his step-father Alexander Armstrong, Jr. (Mr. J) for planting the seed of music in his spirit. It was Mr. J who purchased his 1st trumpet. Quentin was a good student and took his education seriously. After graduating from Montbello High, he enrolled at Metropolitan State College where he graduated with a degree in Business and Computer Science. Quentin was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Quentin was musically inclined and although gifted in playing the trumpet, he had a fascination with the bass guitar. Quentin decided that he would teach himself how to play the bass, with his end goal being to play the bass at church. With input from a neighbor and a strong determination his goal was achieved! Quentin was an exceptional bass player whose gift was renown in churches throughout the city. The Thompson/Armstrong family joined Central Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. W. O. Mays, Sr. Quentin was an active member singing in the Jubilette Choir, Choralier Choir and the Inspirational Choir. He served as a Junior Usher, attended Sunday School and Sunday School Conferences. Quentin loved the Lord. On August 3, 1996 Quentin married Nicole LaShea Perkins (whom he lovingly called “Nick”). To this union 2 children were born â₦ Jayson Caleb and Kelsey Nicole Thompson. The family enjoyed going to the movies to see the latest Super Hero and Marvel Comic movies. They loved to travel, sing and create music together as a family, and treasured the quiet time spent enjoying one another. The family attended church services at For His Glory Christian Center and Calvary Chapel in Aurora, Colorado. Life in the Thompson household consisted of lots of athletic activities to include football and competitive dance (ballet, tap, lyrical, jazz, contemporary and acro). Whatever his children were involved in, their biggest cheerleader was their Dad. Kelsey loved chocolate chip pancakes which upon request, her father would put on his chef hat and personally prepare them for her. Jayson and Kelsey were truly the loves of his life ~ his pride and joy! Quentin had a special love for his nephew Gabriel whom he supported in all his endeavors. After 19 years of marriage, Quentin and Nicole went their separate ways yet stayed in close contact as they continued to raise 2 exceptional children. A true family man. Quentin had a successful business career beginning as a cashier at King Soopers; moving on to IBM; Great West Life Insurance; The Dish Network and Johns Manville. He was currently working at Kaiser Permanente as an IT Tech ~ Software Engineer. Quentin excelled in the IT arena and was considered a “Computer Whiz”! He could spend numerous hours alone developing and exploring on his computer. Quentin kept Christ in his life and was an active member at Denver Christian Bible Church under the leadership of Pastor John Moreland. His baby brother, Alexander stated that Quentin was the voice of reason between the brothers. He could step in a contentious situation and bring calm. On Monday, October 15, 2018 at 7:07 p.m. at University Anschutz Medical Campus, the voice of reason bid his family farewell as he transitioned to the other side. He joined his father, Willie Richard Thompson; his step-father, Alexander Armstrong, Jr.; his two brothers ~ Samuel and Lawrence; his paternal Grandmother, Evelyn Lewis and his maternal Grandparents Elijah and Susie Gant. We have no doubt that Quentin loved us, yet God loved him best. We will forever be grateful for Quentin Kelsey Thompson. And yes Quentin, you will always be the “Apple of our Eye”.
