Porter Andrews was born July 18, 1912, in Overton, Texas to the late Newt Andrews and the late Marciena Bell Andrews. He peacefully transitioned to eternal rest on Wednesday, September 20th 2017, at the Harbor Park Estates Assisted Living Facility in Fort Washington, Maryland where he lived for the past two years. Porter grew up in Texas and was the oldest of six children. He fulfilled the role of a father figure to his five younger sisters after their father passed away when they were young children. At the age of 30, Porter enlisted in the Army Air Forces as a member of the 461 Aviation Squadron where his occupation was a Cook. He earned various accolades, ribbons and medals during his career. Corporal Andrews received an honorable discharge in 1946. Porter married the love of his life, Vernie, and they resided in Denver, Colorado for the duration of their marriage. He thoroughly enjoyed his employment at Porter Adventist Hospital where he worked in the cafeteria for many years until his retirement. After his beloved wife passed away, Porter moved to Alexandria, Virginia to be closer to his niece Georgia, her husband Joe and their family. Uncle Pete, as he was affectionately called, enjoyed grocery shopping, eating vanilla ice-cream with cookies after EVERY meal, listening to oldies but goodies, watching baseball games on TV and always had a Star Brite peppermint in his mouth! Porter was blessed to live a long, prosperous life until the age of 105. When asked his secret for living a long life, he always responded he came off the streets early! He will be truly missed by the loved ones he leaves behind to cherish his many memories.
