Pinkie Mae Careathers was born on December 20, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas to her parents, Henry Wesley and Annie Mae Bradley Wesley. She was the second of five children born in the family. In 1944, the family relocated to Denver, Colorado. She enrolled in the Denver Public School System; where she attended Cole Middle School and East High School. She excelled academically and had a great sense of humor. She enjoyed listening to the radio show "Inter-Sanctum." She loved the horror thrill of the show and she would bury her head under her covers as she listened. Pinkie accepted the Lord, as her personal savior at a very early age and joined New Hope Baptist Church. Pinkie was the proud mother of a son, she named Alex, and given the nickname, "Rooney." She was later blessed with a baby girl named Anna, whom was affectionately called, "Petunia." While working in the historic Five Points District of Denver, she met, Clifford "Duecy" Careathers, who was serving in the United States Army and stationed at Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They both were smitten and the romance began. They later united in holy matrimony and to this union, four beautiful children were born, Michael "Ned", Narvia "Darlin", Clifford, III and Cynthia "Animal." The family shared many happy and precious moments together. She was later blessed with fifteen grandchildren and forty-four great grandchildren, who all were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. By profession, Pinkie was employed as a housekeeper, and a Bus Aide for the Denver Public Schools. She worked as an EKG Technician for Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital and in 1995; she retired from Rocky Flats Arsenal. She has always worked hard and was dependable. Although Pinkie held many job titles, she performed her assigned duties with a spirit of excellence. Pinkie was a fun loving woman, who enjoyed life and those she encircled. She was an excellent cook; she enjoyed making okra, chili, homemade rolls, and rum cakes that would melt in your mouth, just to name a few. Anyone who visited her home, left full and ready to take a nap. She was a no none sense type of person. You could count on her being honest, even if what she said would hurt your feelings. She did so with love, kindness and understanding. She will be missed by all whom were fortunate enough to have known this "kind and wonderful lady. To know Pinkie was to love her. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Careathers, Jr.; a son, Clifford Careathers, III; her daughter, Cynthia Careathers; her parents, two siblings, a grandson, and a great grandson. Pinkie Mae Careathers departed this life on September 12, 2014, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include 3 sons, Alex H.W. (Linda) Burl, Michael W. (Ramona) Careathers and David F. Colbert, Jr.; 3 daughters, Anna S. (Elmer) Joyce-Woodyard, Narvia J. Careathers-Varney all of Denver and Sherri E. Colbert of Aurora; 1 brother, General G. (Sonda) Gills of Phoenix, Arizona; 1 sister, Janie G. Walker of Aurora; 15 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephew, other relatives and many friends.
