Pearlett Smith was born on January 11, 1950, in Gary, Indiana to her parents, Frank Hill and Johnnie Palmer Hill. She was the second child born in the family. She was raised surrounded by her brother, Frank and her sisters, Lilett and Anita. As a child, she was athletic, she had a great sense of humor and she loved drawing. She is also remembered as being neat, well organized, and she loved styling her hair. She received her formal education by graduating from Frobel High School in 1969. Pearlett united in holy matrimony to Calvin Smith. They first met when they both lived in Gary, Indiana. To this union, Carla, Paula, and Marsha were born. They remember her as loving them unconditionally. She was a mother whose pride and joy was the care and nurture of her family. They also remember her loving Christmas and her buying inexpensive gifts for everyone. Pearlett was later blessed with four grandchildren, Leonard, Anthony, Da'ron and Ukari and seven great grandchildren, who were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. They fondly called her "Big Momma" and remember her spoiling them with her cooking, watching television and watching movies with them. They also remember her as a strong disciplinarian, who knew how to administer tough love. Pearlett was no stranger to hard work. She has worked in several different places of employment. Her last place of employment was in one of the local hotels working as a Supervisor. Wherever employed, she was hard working, dependable and performed all her duties with a spirit of excellence. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Pearlett was baptized at the Corner Stone Baptist Church in Gary, Indiana at a very early age. She was a fun loving woman who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends. She enjoyed traveling, shopping, doing embroidery, playing card games and ironing. Her clothes always had the best creases. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this one of a kind woman. She leaves a void that will never be replaced. To know Pearlett was to love her. Pearlett Smith departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on April 23, 2015, in Aurora, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her children, Carla (Anthony) Walker, Paula (Tommy) Verner, and Marsha Smith; two sisters, Lilett Hill, and Anita Hill; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and many friends.
