Pastor Williams Jr.

In the summer of 1937, Lemuel Paul Williams, Jr. was born to Lemuel and Leona Williams of Garrison, TX, the second of 10 children.

Growing up, he would read a lot. He loved complex word usage and loved learning. He was more intelligent than he sometimes appeared due to his humbleness. He was a basketball player in high school and loved sports. He was an avid follower of football, basketball and, in the end, loved tennis.

After graduating from Concord High, he moved to Lufkin, TX where he met and married his one and only wife, Juanita Lindsey. This marriage lasted 50 years until her death and produced five children: Lemuel III (Cheryl) Williams, Jacqueline (Timothy) Pender, Terry Williams, Alton (Zena), Donya Williams, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

After marrying, Rev. Williams gave his life to the Lord and thus began a new life of significant service to God. This journey started at Shiloh Baptist Church of Lufkin, TX, under Pastor P.H. Dolphus. In 1970, he moved his family to Denver, CO in search of a better life and opportunities. For years, he would drive his family back to Texas every summer to visit family and friends, and to see his old pastor. After moving to Denver, Rev. Williams settled the family at Shiloh Baptist Church under the pastorage of Rev. W. C. Jones where he committed himself to significant service.

In December of 1981, Rev. Williams was called to pastor New Mt. Olive Baptist Church. He would later change the name to Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Greater Mt. Olive became the most rewarding and cherished accomplishment of his life.

He loved this church. Rev. Williams would pastor for 30 years with his wife alongside him with the support of his family until, for health reasons, he had to retire. Years after the close of the church, there remains a unique bond with all of his former members, and most continue to serve God in new places.

His other accomplishments and positions held include: Chairman of the Deacon Board, Trustee, Brotherhood President, Choir President, Chairman of Finance, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Pastor's Aide Worker, Vice Moderator of the Northern District Baptist Association, and Moderator from 1994 to 2004. He continued to host the Northern District for another eight years after his tenure.

Rev. Williams earned a B.S. and a Master's degree in Urban Ministries from Aspen Christian College and Seminary. Rev. Williams conducted revivals in and out of the state and was part of the Preaching Quest of the Shiloh District Baptist Association of TX.

One his most memorable and significant events was having the privilege of preaching in the Moderators Department of the National Baptist Convention, USA. It should be noted also that he was a very good singer and has recorded with the Shiloh Inspirational choir.

Rev. Williams has left a significant footprint within the Denver church community. He leaves us with a reputation of being a kind and Godly man. He would often say “God cares about how we treat each other,” and that is how he lived his life, serving and showing kindness to others.

He is survived by seven siblings, Estell Tatum, James (Pearlie) Williams, Preston (Linda) Williams, Calvin (Joycelyn) Williams, Larry Williams, Beverly (Junior) Jackson, and Sharon Williams.

Preceding him in death is Brenda Mason (daughter), Syphronia Hassan (daughter) and his mother, Leona Williams, who recently preceded him. Rev. Williams will be missed by many. The family has received many condolences from those whose lives he touched.
