A GODLY WOMAN
Pastor Peggy Jean Perkins-Barnes
On August 4, 1936, the world welcomed a bright & shining light named Peggy Jean Green, to parents Abner Green and Ethel L. Leonard Green in Anson, TX. Raised in a nurturing Christian environment, Peggy grew to embody the very essence of a servant leader. Peggy was a very loving, kind, caring, and patient child. Being that she was the 2nd oldest of 10 children, she was like a surrogate mother to her siblings. Peggy would cook, clean, and take care of her siblings. From an early age, Peggy loved to read the Bible to her sisters. She taught them how to pray, and how to seek the Holy Ghost. Peggy loved to create stories to read to her siblings, as she had such a vivid imagination. When Peggy was a teenager, the family moved to Plainview Texas where she attended high school. Peggy excelled in academics, and she was also a member of the school’s basketball team. Moving to Plainview also brought about change in Peggy’s life. Her family was classified as hardship cases, and the children had to work in the cotton fields. Even with change, Peggy remained optimistic and continued to help care for her siblings. Peggy would help them with their homework and would always encourage them to be successful in life. Peggy was such a significant role model to her siblings, and they looked up to her. At the age of 17, Peggy found love and partnership with her late husband, Robert Perkins, with whom she joyfully raised nine children. Her courage led her to Denver, Colorado in 1970, where she later married Daniel Barnes, welcoming another child into her heart and home.
The heart of Pastor Perkins-Barnes beat strongest within the walls of Campbell Memorial Church of God in Christ, where she dedicated herself under the esteemed guidance of Bishop L.A. Jorden and later, Superintendent Lamar Kennedy. A devoted prayer warrior and dynamic youth leader, her legacy as a Missionary was adorned with selfless service and an unwavering commitment to her community. She held prominent positions, including serving as the Central District President of the Purity Class, a national C.O.G.I.C Youth Organization, under Missionary Louvenia Craft. Her incredible journey included accolades from the Mayor of Denver and a divinely inspired transition into Evangelism, where she helped establish a TV ministry and supported the growth of smaller churches alongside leaders Crystal and Lee Cartier. In time, she embraced the role of State and Regional Women’s Supervisor of the Rocky Mountain Region, appointed by Bishop C.T. Johnson, only to humbly resign to nurture her personal outreach ministry. Her dedication carried her to the Center of My Joy Church, partnering with Elder James Shaw to cultivate a vibrant ministry.Pastor Perkins-Barnes spirit soared with creativity; she penned plays and lessons that uplifted God’s Kingdom, knowing that the arts were powerful tools to inspire the hearts, minds, and souls of young people. With an unwavering passion for saving souls, she embodied the spirit of Matthew 9:37-38, recognizing that while the harvest is plentiful, the laborers are few. Her ministry extended far beyond the church walls, leading her to Friendship Baptist Church, where she continued her outreach efforts and offered her wisdom as a matriarch of faith. Her legacy, an exquisite tapestry woven with love and devotion, will live on through her beloved children and grandchildren, a testament to her profound impact on all who knew her. Respected and adored by individuals from all social classes, Pastor Perkins-Barnes can assuredly be with the words, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."She is reunited in eternal peace with her parents, Abner and Ethel Green; her late husband, Daniel Barnes; her dear sons, Robert and Albert Perkins; daughters, Juanita Mitchell and Diane Cooks; grandson, Albert Perkins Jr.; and siblings, Marvin J.
