The life of Deacon Owen D. Sebree is one that radiates warmth, love and is full of good works. He was born on October 25, 1928, in Elkton, Kentucky to his parents, Ernest Sebree and Emma Cobb Sebree. He was the fourth child born in the family. He had five brothers, Jesse, George, Frank, Robert, James and one sister, Pearline. Growing up in rural Kentucky meant working on the farm. He was taught at an early age how to milk a cow and he did so alongside his father. On January 4, 1951, Deacon Sebree enlisted in the United States Army. While serving his country, he earned an Occupational Medal while stationed in Germany. He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged. On June 27, 1953, Deacon Sebree united in holy matrimony to the former Mattie Darlene Jackson. They first met while attending a church picnic. They exchanged vows at the St. Bethlehem Baptist Church in Pembroke, Kentucky. To this union, two beautiful baby girls were born, Lynn Owenett and Sonya Onez`. He was a loving and devoted husband & caring and nurturing father, who attended all their school events and activities. Deacon Sebree received his formal education in Evansville, Indiana, where he graduated from Lincoln High School. He furthered his education by earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business on June 3, 1963, from the Evansville College in Indiana. By profession, Deacon Sebree was employed as an accountant by The Public Service Company of Colorado. He is remembered as being hardworking, dedicated and collegial. He retired in 1993, after working for over twenty years. He was also the CEO of Owen Sebree Bookkeeping and Tax Service located in Denver, Colorado. He performed his duties with precision and accuracy. He worked with a vast array of clientele from family, neighbors, friends, church members and many others. A man of strong faith and belief in the Lord, Deacon Sebree accepted the Lord as his personal savior at a very early age and joined the Union Baptist Church in his native home of Elkton, Kentucky. Deacon Sebree has been a faithful and dedicated member of Zion Baptist Church. He joined the church under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend Wendell T. Liggins. When he joined the church, he was already an ordained Deacon, having been ordained on March 1, 1961, at the New Hope Baptist Church in Evansville, Indiana. He later used his accounting talents and became a Trustee and shortly afterward, he became the Treasurer of the church. He held that position until his passing. His talent and expertise are evident throughout Zion Baptist Church. He has made the church stronger and better for the next generation. He truly loved his church and its current pastor, Reverend Frank M. Davis. Deacon Owen Sebree embraced and epitomizes the words of that old hymn, "May the Work I've Done Speak For Me". He has been a faithful member of the church for over 50 years. Deacon Sebree was a fun-loving man, who enjoyed life and those he encircled. In his free time, he enjoyed bowling, from which he received numerous trophies, spending quality time with his family, and reading & studying the Bible. He also enjoyed gardening and working on cars. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful Christian man. To know Deacon Sebree was to love him. Deacon Owen D. Sebree departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on August 16, 2015, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include his loving and devoted wife, Deaconess Mattie D. Sebree of Denver; two daughters, Lynn O. Sebree of Aurora and Sonya O. Sebree of Denver; one brother, James (Shirley) Sebree of Toledo, Ohio; his brothers in law, Reverend Lucian (Elisabeth) Jackson, Dr. William E. (Yvonne) Jackson; his sisters in law, Lena (John) Mack, Emma (Sylvester) Ellis, Ruby Bivins, Queen (Lawrence) Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and many friends.
