Those we love remain with us, for love itself lives on and cherished memories never fade because a loved one's gone; those we love can never be more than a thought apart; for as long as there is memory, they'll live on in the heart. Mother Velma Lee Sayles was born on March 10, 1944, in Greenwood, Mississippi to her parents, Armon Welch and Lula Lemon Welch. She was the third of six children born to this union. She received her formal education in Mississippi, where she graduated from high school. Mother Sayles accepted the Lord as her personal savior at a very early age. She worshipped at the Lockalona Missionary Baptist Church in Mississippi. She truly believed in the power of prayer and felt everyone needed to have the right relationship with the Lord. When the hymnologist penned the words, "If I can Help Somebody as I travel along, if I can help somebody with a word or song; then my living shall not be in vain." These words so describe the life and legacy of Mother Sayles. She was an active member of Graham Memorial COGIC in Denver, Colorado and has been a member for over thirty years, serving under the pastoral leadership of Supt. Patrick L. Demmer. She has led her church in noon day prayer as well as conducted countless "Shut In" Services. She truly loved the Lord and anyone around her could feel that her Christian walk was one who was a true servant of the Lord. Mother Sayles was the proud mother of three sons, Stacy, Wardell and Luther. She was later blessed with three grandchildren, who all were an additional source of joy and pride in life. She was a mother who took great pride in the care and nurture of her family. They all shared many happy and memorable moments together. Mother Sayles was employed as a Child Care Teacher. She was hard-working, dedicated and performed her duties with a spirit of excellence. She was a fun loving person who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she loved reading the Bible and offering encouragement to others. She was an avid basketball fan and especially supported the Denver Nuggets. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful, Christian woman. To know Mother Sayles was to love her. She is preceded in death by two sisters, Minnye Belle Loggins and Lula Mae Welch; her father, Armon Welch. Mother Velma Lee Sayles departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on August 15, 2015, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her three sons, Stacy Reed, Wardell Reed, Sr. and Luther E. Dickens all of Aurora; her mother, Lula Welch of Greenwood, MS; two brothers, John Welch and Joe Welch both of Greenwood, MS; three grandchildren, Iesha and Iasia Reed and Wardell Reed, Jr; a niece, Jacquelin Jett, and nephew, Byron Loggins of Aurora, CO; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, her Graham Memorial Community COGIC Family and host of other relatives and many friends.
