Sarah Elizabeth Henderson Jones was born on May 11, 1935, to Alonzo Henderson and Sarah Elizabeth Cornwell Henderson in Jonesboro, Louisiana. She was the youngest of nine children. She attended Hawk Elementary School and Jackson High School in Jonesboro and graduated in 1952. She celebrated every class reunion, attending the last one in July of 2015. She was a bright student earning high grades and was on the Honor Roll every year. After graduation, she moved to Denver, Colorado to be near family and further her education. In 1954, she met and married Sargent George North, who was in the Air Force and relocated to Atlanta,. Georgia. One child, Arthur Lin North was born to this union. She returned to Denver and finished nursing school. She began working as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and worked in the health care field for over 20 years, working in several Denver area hospitals and nursing homes. In 1958, she married Marine Private 1st Class Robert Freaderick Jones. Six children were born to that union, Elizabeth "Libby" Ann Johnson, Robert "J. R." Porter Jones, Sarah Shannon Jones, Alonzo Henderson Jones, Freaderick Goff Jones, and Vapi Deon Jones. Sarah's children were her world. She poured everything she had into them and set a great example for them. After retiring from nursing, Sarah started volunteer work. She had a spirit of service, and she blessed everyone she met. Using her medical skills, she provided blood pressure checks and CPR training as a volunteer for the Red Cross. She received the 9 WHO CARE award in 1987, for her service. She also worked as an Election Judge during several elections. Wanting to continue to be of service, Sarah began work with area food banks and continued this volunteer service for over thirty years. The opportunity to feed others became her passion. She was one of the first volunteers with the City Harvest Food Bank Program at Volunteers of America. She would deliver food to people in need to be a blessing to them. She would simply tell them, "I was just thinking of you!" She served on the Board of Directors for the House Beside the Road Food Bank and supported the H.O.P.E. Food Bank. She would give of herself and never expect anything in return. She continued her work with various food programs until 2014, when her health declined. Beyond volunteering, Sarah's gift for cooking was immeasurable and she created meals with so much love. She was such an amazing cook that even her burnt cookies tasted good! Sarah took care of grieving families with a pot of cabbage, celebrated birthdays with pies, and every now and then something delicious would be made for no real reason. The kitchen was her refuge of peace. She found great pleasure in preparing food for her family and others. When Sarah wasn't in the kitchen or volunteering, she could be found ironing, shuttling grandchildren in Granny Cab, watching Animal Planet, or fishing. She loved fishing and would fish with anyone, anywhere, at any time. Sarah loved to share her passion for fishing with friends and family. Sarah was a committed member of Odom Memorial C.O.G.I.C. for over 50 years. Her children were raised as members of the church family. When time came for a new pastor for Odom Memorial, Sarah participated because she was a deeply committed member and loved Odom. She served as a member of the committee who selected Pastor Wayne McDonald, and his wife Janice McDonald, to lead her church. Their family answered her prayers. When the McDonald children were young, she enjoyed baking cookies for the family. The McDonalds allowed her to live her passion daily. She was faithful and trusted that the Lord had sent the right pastor and she was going to serve him no matter what. Sarah faithfully attended many local and national C.O.G.I.C. conventions and meetings. She served as a nurse to the pulpit and anyone else in need. She loved Sunday School and was a teacher in her younger years. Sarah's ultimate service was to the Lord, His church and His people. It did not matter who or how the person treated her, she was there to serve them. All equal, all the same, as if she was serving the Lord. She would show a type of love and respect that is rare today. She truly was one of a kind. A true Woman of Virtue, who loved being in the Servitude of our Lord. To know Mother Sarah was to love her.
