Mother Golson

December 25, 1925 — June 15, 2015

Maldoshia Golson was born to Baker and Girtie Parker on December 25, 1925 in Autauga County Alabama. She was the best Christmas gift her parents could have ever received. Her mother Girtie died when she was a baby and her father remarried. She was raised by her stepmother, Annie Parker, along with eight other siblings. She was the second oldest of nine. She graduated from Autauga County High School. On January 12, 1947, after having been school sweethearts, she married the love of her life, William Thomas Golson. He affectionately called her "Shortie". To this union four children were born; Carolyn, William, Jr., Stephanie, and Zachary. In addition to raising her own children, she opened her home and raised her grandson, Joshua Shields, and nephew, Reginald Cates, after their parent and grandmother passed, respectively. William and Maldoshia enjoyed 68 loving years of marriage during which, as a military family, they traveled to almost every state in the union. Maldoshia loved to cook and was especially known for her rolls and pound cakes. She and William could often be found cooking in the kitchen together. She enjoyed family gatherings, traveling, gardening, canning, cooking, and sewing. Many friends and family members were recipients of her handmade quilts and her church family and friends were recipients of her culinary skills. Maldoshia gave her life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Harmony Baptist Church in Autaugaville, Alabama. She raised her children to have the utmost respect for God and the things of God. She served alongside her husband in ministry as a Deaconess. When her son was called by God to plant True Light Baptist Church, she and her husband, after 25 years of membership, set aside their leadership roles and left New Hope Baptist church to support their son. In the more than 27 years of his pastoral ministry, she offered words of encouragement, physical assistance in maintaining the building, and contributed in countless ways to the success of the church. She was a generous person who would always go out of her way to help people and her home was always open to those in need. She always had a word of encouragement for those with heavy hearts. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Jean Shields; siblings, Elvin, James, Beulah, Montgomery, Roosevelt, and Juanita. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, William Thomas Golson, Sr.; her children, William (Melvia) Golson, Jr., Stephanie (Kevin) Hartfield, and Zachary (Sandra) Golson; her sister, Yvonne (James) Cannon, and brother Baker Parker, Jr.; six grandchildren: Melody, William III, Joshua, Jazmin, Jordan, Malik; and four great-grandchildren: Sable, Autumn, Olivia, and Jaiden; in addition to a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
