Mother Helen Rose Dixon was born on October 21, 1935, in Columbus, Mississippi to her parents, Doc Amos and Lillian Sims. She was the second out of ten children born in the family. She completed her early education by attending the public school system in Columbus, Mississippi. On January 13, 1960, Helen united in holy matrimony to Ralph Dixon in Memphis, Tennessee. She was the proud mother of five beautiful children. Michael, Vernita, Shirley, Alicia and Asia. The care and nurture of her family was most important to her. They all remember her cooking as the best. She taught them life lessons of being responsible and they have shared those teaching with their children. Ralph preceded her in death in 1983. Helen was later blessed with thirteen grandchildren, Letetia, LaKenya, Marquetta, Brandis, Micajah, Kiarah, Michael, Jr., Danielle, Michael, III, Mathias, Prince, AJ and Decorian;18 great grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren. who all were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. They lovingly called her "Na Na" and fondly remember her taking pictures of all of them, the early morning wake up calls and all the "good old fashion grandma kisses." They too have many happy and memorable moments of times shared together. By profession, Mother Dixon was employed by both Children's Hospital and the Denver Public School System. Her co-workers remember her being hardworking, dependable and a joy to work with. They also remember her perfume, White Diamonds and how the aroma would be left in every room she entered. She was awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the Environmental Services Department and she had been awarded Employee of the Month. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Mother Dixon has been a faithful and dedicated member of Unity Church of God In Christ for a number of years. She served her church and the Lord as a member of the Mother's Board. She loved her church and the fellowship shared with her church family. She worshiped under the pastoral leadership of Superintendent Lamar Kennedy. Mother Dixon was a fun loving woman, who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she enjoyed spending quality time with her family, going to church, conversing with her good dear friend Ms. Judy, all her God Children; Selena, Dianne, Calvin, Montez, Denard, Byron, Dishell and Cora. She also enjoyed family bar-be-que's, Friday fish fry's, dressing up in fine suits, wearing her matching hats, and hanging with the "Golden Girls." She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful woman. To know Mother Dixon was to love her. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Doc Amos and Lillian Sims; her brother, Robert White; her sister, Jerline Montgomery; and her grandson, Xavier Walker. Mother Helen Rose Dixon departed this life to embrace the Lord on December 27, 2014, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include 1 son, Michael L. Phillips of Cheyenne, WY; 4 daughters, Vernita A. Huff of Aurora, Shirley F. McClain, Alicia Dixon and Asia Dixon all of Denver; 3 brothers, George Sims, Willie (Elaine) Sims and Charles Sims all of Memphis, TN; 4 sisters, Jamie Sims of Indianapolis, IN, Amelia A. Hall, Nashville, TN, Dorothy Sims, and Betty (Osborne) White all of Memphis, TN; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins other relatives and many friends.
