The pages of this book began for Miller Sewing when he was born on July 12, 1922, in Bremond, Texas to his parents, Thomas Wesley Sewing, Sr. and Emma Williams Sewing. He was the fifth child born in the family. He was raised surrounded by his brothers, Jim, Lee, Virgil and his sister, Rena. In addition, he had an extended family of siblings which included, Fannie Mae, Bennie Lee and Ezekiel. Growing up, Miller had a reputation for being hard working and very studious. Miller received his formal education in Bremond, TX, where he graduated from Bremond High School. Just two months prior to his passing, his high school celebrated his 70th class reunion. Although he could not attend due to declining health, his classmates were still asking about him. Miller furthered his education by attending the University of Denver, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Education. On October 1, 1943, he was drafted in the United States Army. He learned the trade of Welding. While serving his country, Miller earned an American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged at the rank of Technician 5. On July 12, 1962, Miller united in holy matrimony to the former DeVera Banks in Denver, Colorado. To this union, one daughter, Renée Lynn was born. He nicknamed her "Pumpkin." She remembers him as a loving, devoted father whose pride and joy were his family. Later in life his two granddaughters, Lauren (Little Pumpkin) and Monica (Littlest Pumpkin) commanded the majority of his time as grandpa, babysitter, chauffeur and tutor. They lovingly called him "Gramps" and fondly remember all the happy and memorable moments they all shared together. In the last months of his life, he was blessed to meet his great granddaughter, Ava (nicknamed "Tiny Pumpkin" by Renée in his honor). In July 1980, he wed Mary L. Simpson. They were married for fifteen years. By profession, Miller was employed as a civilian by the United States Air Force on Lowry Air Force Base as a Master Training Instructor. He constantly had to continue his education to keep up with the current technology. He retired after 31 years. He then went to work full-time at United Bank of Denver, as an Assistant Manager in the Courier Services Department. Miller also worked part-time jobs during various times before/after his retirement: Capital Enterprises, Inc., as Co-owner of his maintenance company; Sears Roebuck and Company, as a Senior Credit Authorizer, University of Chicago's Denver Branch, as an Interviewer. Miller was dedicated and hardworking every place he was employed. He worked extremely well with others; a supervisor who led by example. He performed all his duties with a spirit of excellence and precision. A man of faith and belief in the Lord, Miller accepted the Lord as his personal Savior and was baptized at an early age. In 1963, he joined Zion Baptist Church in Denver, Colorado under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend Wendell T. Liggins. During his active years, he served as Chairman of the Budget Committee, as Finance Chairman for Church Redevelopment and finally as Recording Secretary for the Trustee Ministry before health issues forced him to step down. As a Trustee, he was instrumental in the renovation of the current kitchen located in Bledsoe Hall. Miller truly loved his church, its current Pastor, Reverend Frank M. Davis and his church family. In his free time, Miller enjoyed reading at the library, serving at his church, talking about his career, watching the Denver Broncos and spending quality time with family and friends. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful man. He is preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings. Miller Sewing departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on June 28, 2013, in Denver, Colorado.
