Michael Lee Griffin, Sr. was born on January 11, 1948 in St. Louis, Missouri to John “Griff” and Lorraine “Lo” Griffin. He was the firstborn child with two brothers, Reginald “Uncle Reggie” Griffin and Donald “Duck” Griffin; three sisters, Daryl Ann “Booby” Easter, Scarlett “Cookie” Griffin, and Valerie Hilson.
Michael completed his education in the St. Louis Public School System. Shortly after, he met and married Imogene Gage and to this union four children were born, Michelle, Belinda, Catrina and Michael Jr. He then met Mary Brock and Artemus (Lavelle) Brock was born. He later met the third love of his life Candy Starkey where he spent the next eighteen years loving and raising grandchildren and great grandchildren with Candy.
Michael grew up in an active home full of love and good times. He later accepted Christ in his life and completed courses to become a Minister sharing the word of God to all that would listen.
At an early age, Michael loved spending time with his cousin Craig Berry and best friend Terroll Moss. His love for dog training as a teenager made him known in the neighborhood as the guy to make the dogs mean! He loved picnics and fishing at O’Fallon park in St. Louis in his early days. He was known as the no nonsense guy with the hot temper. Michael loved a beer or two with boiled shrimp drowned in hot sauce while playing bid whisk cards on the weekends with Imogene. If the partying went well into the night, momma Lo made sure it became a sleep over!
Michael continued his love of spending time with loved ones with long drives, Friday shrimp fry’s never missing a Friday with his now adult children. He loved dancing the mickey monkey to Smokey Robinson songs and singing on those Friday nights! He made sure to let his sons know he could see the Griffin in them! He was a jack of all trades working jobs from Chef, van driver, to flagman. Michael had a love for hats. He collected various baseball caps as well as Kangol (kangaroo) caps. Upon moving to Colorado and meeting Candy, Michael enjoyed going on family picnics at the Aurora Reservoir. He became a fan of the Denver Broncos football team. If you knew Michael Sr., you knew he often started a conversation with “They knew not to mess with me” or “Your daddy was a bad man, they knew not to mess with me,” and you knew he was telling the truth! He is a lover, a fighter, a father, a grandfather, proud, sometimes stubborn man of God that changed the lives of many that knew him.
Michael Sr. will be missed dearly, but never forgotten by those he leaves behind and impacted throughout his rich and bountiful life.
He left this world knowing he was loved and his legacy will carry on for generations.
