Markeen Weeams

On December 2, 1943, Joe Willie Weeams and Ruby Lee Weeams were blessed with a beautiful baby girl they named, Markeen Weeams, born in Marianna, Arkansas. Markeen was the sixth of seven children born to this union. She was raised around her siblings, Clarence, Robert, Charlie, Dorothy, Pearl, and Vernestine. In 1952, the family seeking better opportunities, moved to Denver, Colorado. It was there; Markeen received her early education and graduated from Manual High School in 1961. Markeen was a loving and devoted mother, to her children: Norris, and Laura Lynn. The three of them spent quality time together, growing and loving each other. Norris and Laura will cherish the time they shared, her life and her love. She was later blessed with two grandchildren, Jordan and Marquis. By profession, Markeen was a Cashier and Cook, working for various grocers, restaurants, and businesses in the Denver Metro area. She enjoyed working as a Food Service Nutritionist for the Cherry Creek Daycare. She was adored, working with the preschoolers, however; her first concern was to ensure her grandson was taken care of with the best possible care. She shared her love with all of the children and they loved her with the same passion. We will always remember Markeen as a loving mother and friend who did not mince words. With her quick wit and sharp temper, she would always speak her mind. One of her nephews called her, "The Oracle," meaning, she was someone that you could always talk to. She seemed to have special insight into every situation. Markeen's passions were her family, cooking, reading, and watching "Judge Judy" on television. We loved her collards greens and meat loaf, although we will miss everything that she cooked. Markeen loved and feared the Lord even though she did not attend any organized church regularly, but on September 13, 1987, she gave her life to the Lord and was baptized at Macedonia Baptist Church. Markeen was very proud to see her great nephew. Reverend Dwayne Moore, growing up in the church to the point of service that God appointed him Pastor and Founder of Ebenezer Baptist Church, located in Denver, Colorado. She was so happy to transfer her membership to Ebenezer upon the dedication in early 2013. As her health began to decline, she was unable to attend worship services as she would like but her prayers were earnest and sincere. Markeen was full of wisdom, faith, and love. She was the rock that held her family together and helped to instill in her family to be the "best individuals they could be." To know Markeen Weeams was to love her. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joe Willie and Ruby Lee Weeams; siblings, Clarence Banks, Charlie Weeams, and Vernestine Lowe. Markeen Weeams departed this life to the Lord's embrace on June 15, 2013, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and to mourn her loss include her children, Norris D. (Lisa) Surratt, Aurora, Laura L. O'Donnell, Denver; her brother, Robert L. (Elizabeth) Weeams, Denver; her sisters, Dorothy Mae Moore, Pearl Mae Anderson, both of Denver; her grandchildren, Jordan N. Surratt, Aurora, Marquis L. Martizna, Denver; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
