Marguerite Sterrett

August 24, 1931 — March 3, 2014

Marguerite Alice Sterrett was born on August 24, 1931 in Denver, Colorado to Marshall Everette Navarro and Alberta Doris Dorsey. Not entering this world alone, she was the first twin born with Marshall, Jr. and the first of four children born to this union. She spent many precious moments with her siblings Marshall, Jr., Phillip, Sharon, and Anthony. They so lovingly nicknamed her, Margie. She completed her formal education at South High School in Denver, Colorado. During those times, Marguerite and Marshall, Jr. were a tap dancing sensation. Gracefully performing on stage, Sharon remembers, Fred Astaire coming into town and asking Marguerite and Marshall to travel with him as he performed all over the country and in many movies; however, she had met the love of her life, Wendell J. Sterrett, and refused to leave him behind. In 1948, Wendell and Marguerite were joined in holy matrimony. They were blessed with eight children, Lawrence, Brenda, Charles, Vicki, Roy, Preston, Terry, and Ted. She was adamant about the children doing something, often telling them, "You are not going to just sit around here all day and do nothing, get your butt up." She taught her children to be good people and to work hard, always ready with a smile for all visitors whether they were friends, or relatives. She was a proud mother who enjoyed the positive things her children did in school and work lives. Her children thought their mom was so cool. They had lots of good family moments, and special memories they shared. Later, her grandchildren and great grandchild were an added source of joy in her life, as she loved them all. Margie rarely worked outside of the home, but made a career out of being a devoted and loving wife and mother. She was a strong presence in the home and the children never wanted for anything. Margie enjoyed spending time with her sister and brothers. They listened to jazz, attended concerts, and live cultural events; they even had the opportunity to meet Rosa Parks at a local church. Margie loved the "black people" experience. Everyone would regularly come to the house to laugh, talk, and watch TV, eat, play games, and just have a good time. Her home was a gathering place for everyone and everyone felt welcome. Marguerite could talk for hours about politics and other topics. She was very opinionated, but always generous and polite. She had a sincere love for people and a caring attitude. …weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. Psalm 30:5 Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell J. Sterrett; son, Lawrence Sterrett; daughter, Vicki Sterrett; her parents, Marshall and Doris Navarro; brothers, Marshall Navarro, Jr., and Anthony Navarro. Marguerite Alice Sterrett departed this life on March 3, 2014 in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and to mourn her loss include her children, Brenda Craig, Charles Sterrett, Roy Sterrett, Preston Sterrett, Terry Sterrett, Ted Sterrett; her brother, Phillip Navarro; her sister, Sharon Navarro; 7 grandchildren, Joey, Anthony, Casandra, Marquez, Ernest, William, Quincey; several great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends.
