Lou Thurman

August 2, 1936 — March 8, 2018

Lou Ethel Thurman better known as “Mama Lou”, was born on August 2, 1936 in Holly Grove, AR to the late Morn and Lucy Jane Mosley. She was number seven of seventeen children. In 1949, her parents relocated the family to Denver, Colorado. She attended Morey Middle School and finished her education at Manuel High School. In 1954, Lou met Jasper Lee Thurman Sr and took him for her beloved husband on May 10, 1955. Seven amazing children were born to this union. She was a dedicated hard worker for the Petroleum Club, Executive Inn, Sam’s Barbeque and Denver Public Schools, where she retired as a head cook for more than 30 years of service. She was a member of the Beaver Chapter of Holly Grove Arkansas Club as well as the Petroleum club. It was in her nature to be all about family like her parents instilled in her. She helped start the Mosley and Thurman Family Reunions. It didn’t matter who you were, if you were hungry, or needed a place to lay your head, she would make sure you had it. She always put others needs ahead of her own. You could always expect a good ole’ game of Spades if three or more showed up at her house, especially for Sunday dinner. Mama Lou was known for her famous dishes such as Turkey and Dressing, various pies (Egg Custard, Sweet Potato, and Pecan), and let’s not forget her one of a kind smothered burritos!! You would always know when dinner was ready because Mama would say, “Good Bread, Good Meat Good God, let us Eat!” She always made you feel special for your birthday by preparing your favorite meal. Every year for her birthday, she would throw her famous Mama Lou Birthday Bash where you would, drink her knock-out punch, see her gorgeous smile, and her unique hitch-hike dance while listening to blues, hip-hop and R&B. Lou Ethel Thurman departed this life on March 8, 2018. She is proceeded in death by her husband Jasper Lee Thurman Sr, better known as “Jack”, her parents Morn and Lucy Jane Mosley. Her siblings, Gerleane Abram, Joe Mosley, Ruth Lee Burns, and Charles Mosley. She leaves to cherish her memory five daughters, Wanda Thompson (Michael Ramos), Carolyne (Odis Jr.) Woods, Annette Thurman, Denise (Craig) Hysaw, Dorothy Thurman, all of Denver, CO.
