Loretta Patterson was born on June 9, 1936, in Brookhaven, Mississippi to her parents, Oliver Montgomery and Eliza Alexander Montgomery. She grew up in a Christian home where her father was a local minister. She was raised surrounded by her brothers, Wilford, R.D., Oliver, Enoch, and her sisters, Lula, Clara, Della, and Ollie. She received her early education in Brookhaven, Mississippi. On May 30, 1953, Loretta united in holy matrimony to David Lee Patterson in Wesson, Mississippi. They relocated to Denver, Colorado in 1956. To this union, six children were born; Queen, David, Donell, Shirley, Ronald, and Donald. They remember her as being outspoken, giving good advice and keeping it “real”. They also remember her as always keeping snacks in her purse when they were out in public. She taught them the importance of saving money and to know the value of a dollar. David preceded her in death in 2001. She was later blessed with twelve grandchildren Danielle, David, Kecia, Davida., Donell, Jr. Donell, Dominique, Danaya, Dejaynay, Dawneshia, Anaiah, Alexis; and ten great-grandchildren, Shemar, Dayana, Jordan, Kaseem, Rhasan, Auji’aunna, Sanaa, Simone, Kennedi, and Kaylani who all were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. They lovingly called her “Granny or Big Granny” and fondly remember all the happy and precious moments they all shared together. To her family, Loretta was a Homemaker. Nothing was more important to her than care and nurture of her family. She loved to cook. They all remember her fried catfish, fried potatoes, greens, potato salad, macaroni, and cheese, just to name a few. As she got older, she took a strong liking to “Burger King.” She loved their cheeseburgers, chicken nuggets, and onion rings. She loved shopping, and her wardrobe consisted of many hats, jogging suits, and dresses. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Loretta has been a member of Spottswood AME Zion Church for over 55 years. She truly loved reading the Bible and the fellowship shared with her church family. Loretta was a fun-loving woman who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she enjoyed playing bingo, card games, watching movies, visits to the Hills, and family gatherings. She loved watching the Soaps on television and the show Empire. Her closest friends, Mary Williams, Delores Ealy, John Allen, and Annie Mae Butler will miss the camaraderie’s they all shared together and the fact that she was a true and trusted friend.
