Lonnie Bernard Gatewood was born on November 15, 1950, in St. Louis, Missouri to his parents, Muriel H. Gatewood and Charles Young. He was raised surrounded by his sister, Muriel. As a child, he was an excellent student and was active in the Boy Scouts. Muriel fondly remembers him always wanting a new train set. Lonnie received his formal education in St. Louis, where he attended Vashon High School in 1968. On March 25, 1969, he enlisted in the United States Army. While serving his country, he earned a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star Medal w/"V" device 1st OLC, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device, Vietnam Service Medal W/2 Bronze Service Stars, 1O/S Bar, Combat Medical Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Expert Badge w/Rifle Bar (M-16), Sharpshooter Badge w/Rifle Bar (M-14). He retired from the Army due to a medical disability with an honorably discharge. A man of faith and belief in the Lord, Lonnie accepted the Lord as his personal savior at a very young age. He attended Pleasant Green Baptist Church in St. Louis, MO for some fifteen years. Lonnie was a fun loving man who enjoyed life and those he encircled. In his free time, he enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends. He loved the beauty of Colorado and enjoyed the great outdoors. His closest friends, Steve Arnold, who has been his partner for over thirty years, Paul Fowler, Jerry, Andrew and Marry will miss his kindness, his listening ear, his generosity and fact that he was a true and genuine friend. Lonnie will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this one of a kind guy. To know Lonnie was to love him. He is preceded in death by his mother, Muriel H. Gatewood. To know Lonnie was to love him. Lonnie Bernard Gatewood departed this life on May 28, 2013, in Aurora, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include his sister, Muriel C. Thomas (Andrew Shaefer) of Denver; his partner, Steve Arnold; his nephews, Antonio J. Thomas of Littleton and Mario V. Thomas of Denver; two nieces, Dezett A. Thomas of Denver and Lafessa (Ramon) Patterson of Aurora; two great nieces, Falana and Amari; one great nephew, Amani; one uncle, Dwight; five aunts, Patricia, Brenda, Delores, Eva and Letha and a host of cousin relatives and many friends.
