Lloyd Johnson

February 3, 1922 — April 16, 2015

Lloyd Edward Johnson was born on February 3, 1922, in Wichita, Kansas to his parents, William Newman and Virginia Harris Newman. He was the only child born to their union. As a child, he enjoyed playing baseball and hanging out with his friends. They would often head out going to church but would wind up at the gambling shack. Lloyd received his formal education in Topeka, Kansas where he attended East Topeka High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942. He was stationed in San Francisco, California. He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged. Lloyd was the proud father of two sons, Marvin and Eugene. They shared many happy and precious moments together. On November 14, 1987, Lloyd united in holy matrimony to the former Erma Jean Banks officiated by the late Reverend J. Langston Boyd in the sanctuary of Shorter Community AME Church. Erma fondly remembers that they met Reverend Boyd during their lunch hour, exchanged vows; returned to work and went out to dinner that evening. She also remembers them praying together each night and he being a good husband and a sharp dresser. She remembers him being a great host at the parties they hosted. At the time of his passing, they had been married for twenty seven years. There were no children born to this union. He was blessed to have seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, who all were additional source of joy and pride in his life. Lloyd was employed as a Skycap for Continental Airlines. He was admired and respected by his co-workers and supervisors. He worked well with others and often received awards for his attendance and timeliness. He once stepped from his full time position just so one of his co-workers could get more hours. He retired after many years of service. A man of faith and belief in the Lord, Lloyd has been a faithful and dedicated member of Shorter Community AME Church for over twenty seven years. He joined under the pastoral leadership of Reverend J. Langston Boyd. He served his church and the Lord as a member of Transportation. He believed in paying his tithes and he always set on the same side of church each Sunday. He served until his health began to decline. Lloyd was a fun loving man who enjoyed life and those he encircled. In his free time, he enjoyed watching sports and western movies. He and Erma enjoyed dining out and going to the movies. He also enjoyed playing solitaire on the computer and spending quality time with family and friends. His closest friends will miss the camaraderie they all shared together and the fact that he was a true and trusted friend who was a true man of God. Lloyd Edward Johnson departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on April 16, 2015, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife, Erma J. Johnson of Denver; two sons, Marvin E. Johnson of Aurora and Eugene (Sandra) Johnson of Denver; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and many friends.
