Lily M. McDonald affectionately known as MAG, was born to her parents, Elvie T. Munn and Laura Jane Register on August 20, 1937 in Burgaw, North Carolina. She was raised with her siblings, Elbert, Albert, Gary, Arthur, John, Jarisha, Dosha and Jackquline. As a child, Lily had a very close relationship with her dad, she cherished anytime she could spend with him. She also enjoyed reading books, dancing and singing.
She was educated at C.F. Pope High School in North Carolina where she graduated high school. Lily furthered her learning by attending Bryant & Stratton College.
Lily met Sam Bellamy while living in North Carolina, and they were married in 1958 in Buffalo, New York, to this union, Lynda, Michael and Elvie were born. Lily was a woman of faith who knew that her help came from the Lord. While living in Buffalo, she joined Mt. Ararat Baptist Church where she served as an usher. Several years later, She met Oscar Bagby while living in Detroit, MI and they were joined in holy matrimony in 1977.
Lily began her professional journey as a clerk for Alexander Hamilton Insurance Company, where she was known for her work ethic and the kindness she extended to her colleagues. She was not just a dedicated employee; she also embraced her artistic side as the lead singer in a country western band based in Detroit, Michigan. Her love of music was a testament to her personality and ability to uplift those around her.
Lily was a devoted host, often welcoming family and friends into her home with open arms. Her entertaining skills were as remarkable as her musical talent, creating memorable gatherings filled with warmth and laughter. She shared many joyful moments with her close friends, Ann Patterson, Dot Cunningham, and Ann Burley, reveling in the joy of companionship. Most importantly, she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Lily is survived by her children, Lynda Devonshire, Michael Bellamy, and Elvie Bellamy; her grandchildren, Aisha, Chausiku, Mario, Gwendolyn, Susan, Jihad, Alvia, Bilal, Brittany, Naimah, Chris, Renee, Malicah, and Levia; and her four great-grandchildren, all of whom were the light of her life. She is preceded in death by her parents, Laural and Elvie, who laid the foundation for the loving family she nurtured.
Lily M. McDonald, a cherished member of her community and a beloved matriarch, passed away on August 18, 2024 just two days shy of her 87th birthday.
Her legacy of positivity, love, and genuine care will be remembered by all who were blessed to have known her.
