Larry “Diamond” Dale Hubbard was born on January 6, 1953 in Texarkana (Wamba), Texas to Keller Rogers Hubbard and Bessie Lee Adams. He was the first born child of this union. He was reared by his grandmother, Anna Ruth Jones and he was her pride and joy. As a child Larry loved his bicycle. He refused to let it get dirty. In fact, if he noticed a puddle of water, he would get off and walk the bike over. His bike always stayed sparkling. Larry was educated in Texarkana in the Oak Grove Public School System where he completed elementary and middle schools. Upon completing Middle School at Dunbar High School, Larry moved to Denver, Colorado where he would further his education. He graduated from Denver’s Manual High School in 1972. He then continued his academic career by attending Emily Griffith Opportunity School. Larry’s classmates always knew that he would show up dressed to the nines, and that he could charm the socks off of all the ladies. If his charismatic nature did not sway them, all he had to do was start to sing and they were hooked. He was as kind as he was charming and ultimately it was his personality that won people over. He was generous and a true gentleman. Always debonair and wore a million-dollar smile. To describe Larry as Mr. Clean would be highly accurate. He liked to stay just thatâ₦CLEAN! Larry grew up in a town that didn’t have paved roads in many areas, so he would have to walk in the gravel. He refused to get his Stacy Adams dirty though. So he would always wear his tennis shoes until he reached the end of the gravel road, then put on his Stacy’s. And he would replace them for his tennis shoes once again when he returned to those gravel roads. He was serious about his appearance. Singing and entertaining was Larry’s lifelong passion, so as a young man he decided to embark on a musical career. He ventured to Los Angeles, were he renewed his personal relationship with Phillip Bailey of the renowned group Earth, Wind and Fire. It was there that he also developed a close friendship with Billy Preston. Prior to leaving Los Angeles, Nucleus signed Larry with Fantasy Records. His enormous talent gained him the respect of many in the industry and in the 80’s he would get the opportunity to tour with Spyro Gyro. He possessed a smooth disposition and his voice exemplified and showcased the true meaning of Soul. Silky, Silky Smooth Soul! Larry was not just a singer, he was the consummate entertainer. He commanded attention and mesmerized audiences around the globe with the masterful way that he commanded the stage. He had a presence that made people gravitate to him. The stage was his life and his life was the stage. He truly was the Voice of a Legend. Larry joined in matrimony with Patrice Collier on July 22, 1995 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Patrice affectionately writes: “Hubbard, my best friend, my husband with the biggest smile, most giving spirit and beautiful loving heart. Miss you. Always your wife. ~Patrice”. On September 11, 1999 Larry wed Marcel Smith in Denver, Colorado. Marcel too still has happy memories of Larry. Marcel warm-heartedly writes: “I will truly miss Larry. Though life takes us in different directions, our friendship was endless. ~Marcy” He was a loyal and loving son, brother uncle and friend. He was also a man who knew the Lord and had a personal relationship with Him. He was a long-time member of St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church in Denver. His one-of-a-kind spirit will be missed. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Keller Rogers Hubbard and Bessie Lee Adams. Larry Dale Hubbard departed this life on June 18, 2018. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include his sister, Patricia A. Shepherd of Las Vegas, Nevada, Sherry D. Wade of Hooks, Texas and Gwendolyn L. Craver of Garland, Texas; his doting niece, Ja’Honey Gilbert; his loyal nephews, Kenny M. Shepard, Kedric D. Shepard and Stephen E. Gilbert; devoted friend Linda; a host of other loving relatives and a multitude of wonderful friends.
