Kim Ray McConnell was born on January 24, 1955, in Denver, Colorado to James "Smitty" Smith and Virginia B. Jones. He was the third child of four children. Kim was raised and surrounded by his grandmother, Birdie Bell McConnell, and three sisters, Michelle, Reginia, and Karen. During Kim's childhood, he became close to the Lord and joined New Hope Baptist where he took on roles within the church such as singing in the choir, participating in youth day ceremonies, and acting in plays in the drama ministry. Kim attended Whittier Elementary School, Cole Junior High School and Manual High School, where he graduated in 1973. After high school, Kim attended Hampton Institute in Hampton Virginia and graduated from Emporia State Teacher College in Emporia, Kansas, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and Special Education. After graduation, Kim had many jobs in Colorado, California, and Texas, including teacher, principle, and home care provider; leading him to his passion working with persons with special needs. By profession, Kim worked until his passing, in Houston, Texas as a Special Needs Coordinator, where he was well loved admired and appreciated. Kim never stayed on a job for too long, and did not want any medals, certificates or recognition for a job well done. His co-workers would say that he worked to perfection with the spirit of excellence. Kim enjoyed life and those who he encircled. In his free time, he enjoyed music, dancing, and keeping up with all his friends and family on Facebook. Kim loved to cook, especially for his clients. He lived his life his way and was proud of who he was and had no regrets. Kim Ray McConnell departed this life on July 5, 2015, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Virginia Jones of Denver, CO; his sisters, Michelle Carter of Denver, CO, Reginia Abdul-Mateen of Missouri City, TX, and Karen Haynes of Long Beach, CA; a host of aunts, cousins, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
