Kenith Lee Berry was born alongside his twin brother, Keith on May 27, 1948, in Denver, Colorado to his parents, Charles Wesley Berry and Evelyn Lorraine Hanna. He enjoyed the time spent with his brothers Keith and Darrell and his sisters, Beverly, Patricia, Vicky and Betty. Kenith received his formal education from the Denver Public Schools. He graduated from East High School in 1967. He furthered his education by attending Denver University, where he studied Art and Philosophy. In February of 1968, Kenith was drafted into the United States Army. He completed basic training at Fort Bliss in Texas. He completed infantry training at Fort Polk in Louisiana. He served in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Tropic Lighting Division. On August 5, 1968, he earned a Purple Heart after being wounded by combat artillery. He was awarded a second Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster after being wounded again in artillery combat. Some of his other awards include a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Combat Infantryman Badge and a Marksman Badge (Rifle). When his overseas tour was over, Kenith became a Drill Sargent stationed at Fort Ord in California. He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged. After his discharge, the post-traumatic stress he endured made life uncertain but he maintained his dignity through his long days of suffering. A man of faith and belief in the Lord, Kenith accepted the Lord as his personal savior at the age of six. He was baptized at Macedonia Baptist Church in Denver, Colorado. He later joined Campbell AME Church under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Donald C. Coleman. For most of his life, he held true to his love for the Lord and the keeping of His commandments, which includes, loving his fellow man. Kenith was a fun loving man who enjoyed long hikes and an occasional drive. He loved creating abstract art, photography, especially around the neighborhood. He was the type of person who made friends easy; many of his friendships have been since childhood. They all will miss the special moments they shared together. Kenith was a quiet and unpretentious man. He was self-assured without being boastful. He was a man who didn't stand the world on its head but he made his presence felt and if pressed, you quickly knew where he stood. His selfless service compliments the way of peace. He was responsible on and off the battlefield. Kenith will be remembered as an anchor in the wind; a shelter in the storm; the first light at day break, and a warm gift from the morning sun. A long time fear has come, we lost a fellow traveler, a trusted friend, and a loving brother. Well done, Kenith Lee Berry, take your rest, we all loved you but God loves you best.
