The life of Kanene Kuumba Knox began when he blessed his parents, Peggy L. Wilder and Earl Knox with his birth on April 29, 1978, in Denver, Colorado. He has one brother, Paul and two sisters, Nina and Nali. Kanene was given the nickname "3K." Kanene means – Insightful, Sensitive, Happy and Persuasive; Kuumba encourages us to do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it. These attributes are characteristic of Kanene. He was a man who led by example and one who strived to make a difference. As a child, Kanene loved animals, carried a jovial personality, he was funny and playful. He received his formal education by attending the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind. While in school, he was a member of the wrestling and football teams. He furthered his education by attending Front Range Community College. Kanene was employed by Argus Companies as an Event Staffer for the past six years. He is remembered as being hard working, dependable and performing his duties with a spirit of excellence. Kanene will be remembered as a strong and outspoken advocate for deaf people. He often said that he wanted to be a "spokesperson for the deaf, and he wanted to help establish and maintain communication for mutual understanding between the deaf and the hearing world." He spoke out on behalf of his community wherever he saw injustice. In 2004, he spoke in front of the Public Safety Review Commission on behalf of deaf people who had been mistreated by police. Based on what he told the Commission, he was asked to help train the police and sheriff department on how to deal with the deaf community. The Deaf Access Award was presented to him by the Denver Commission for People with Disabilities. In his free time, Kanene enjoyed dancing, meeting new people and spending quality time with family and friends. His closest friend, George Baca will miss the camaraderie they shared together. His mother, Peggy fondly reflects: "your greatness was only limited by your physical limitations, rest in peace my son. Thank you for being in my life. Mom!"
