John Henry Brown was born on August 31, 1921, in Arkabutla, Mississippi to his parents, Willie Walter Brown and Bertha William Brown. He was the seventh of nine children born in the family. John left home when he was sixteen years old. He enlisted in the United States Army. He was the first African American in his community to serve his country. He served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He earned numerous, ribbons, awards and citations denoting his meritorious service. He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged after serving for over 20 years. He retired at the rank of Sargent. John united in holy matrimony to the former Flora Lee Cleveland on February 6, 1965. With this union, he became the stepfather of Jerry Cleveland-Jenkins. He was also the father of Sylvester West. Flora remembers her husband as a man who loving, caring and took great pride in the care and nurture of his family. At the time of his passing, he and Flora had been married for over 50 years. After his retirement, John became employed by Lowry Air Force Base. He is remembered as having a strong work ethic. He was dependable and performed his duties with a spirit of excellence. John was recognized on several occasions for his loyalty to duty. John was a fun loving man, who enjoyed life and those encircled. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful man. To know John was to love him. But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 John Henry Brown departed this life on May 6, 2015, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include his loving and devoted wife, Flora L. Brown of Denver; 1 son, Sylvester West of Washington, DC; his step daughter, Jerry Jenkins of Denver; 2 sisters, Sirlena Brown Hill and Samella Brown both of Memphis, TN; 3 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchlldren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
