Janice Zachery was born to Herman Zachery and Edna Mae Zachery on October 2, 1950 in Houston, Texas. She was the third of five children and was raised around her brothers and sister: Herman, Norman, Jewell, and Michael. Janice was known to fearlessly defend her younger siblings, particularly baby brother, Michael, who fondly remember big sister saying "You want to mess with my brother you have to go through me first". In Janice's later years, the family relocated to Texarkana, Texas where she attended Dunbar High School. Janice had many talents. She was an excellent seamstress winning numerous local and school awards. Little Sister Jewell remembers their father buying Janice her first sewing machine, which Janice used to make Jewell her first Gaucho Suit. Janice also loved to cook and was known for her Peach Cobbler and smothered pork chops with gravy. After attending Dunbar High School, Janice became the first Black Secretary to work in the elementary school system. She loved working with people and made friends wherever she went. Her last place of employment was working in housekeeping in one of the local hotels where she was known for her hard work and friendliness. Janice was a mother who dearly loved her only child, Dana. She was also a grandmother, honorary grandmother, and great-grandmother, Harrison II, Jasmine, Tyler, Robert, Harrison III, Josiah, and Tyler Jr. A spiritual woman she explored her faith and had decided as a teen what religion she wanted to pursue, and found comfort in the Methodist Church. She was a very loving person whose passion was helping the less fortunate. In her spare time she enjoyed dancing, listening to Barry White, watching scary movies, reading scary or mystery novels, shopping, going out to eat, and being with family and friends. To know Janice was to truly love her. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter Dana (Harrison Sr.) Williams; two brothers, Herman Zachery and Michael Zachery; one sister Jewell (Dewey Jr.) Wilson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
