The pages of this book began for James Charles Carter, Sr. when he was born on March 18, 1937, in Abbeville, Alabama to his parents, Willie J. Carter and Annie Florence M. Evans Carter. He was the fifth child born in the family. He was raised surrounded by his brothers, King, Willie, Charles, Lawrence, Hubert, Jeremiah, Eddie, Ezra, Armie and his sisters, Annie, Lillie Inez, and Bertha. As a child, he loved driving the family tractor; he had a jovial personality and was very competitive. He could pick 300 – 400 pounds of cotton a day and enjoyed making homemade biscuits for the family. James received his formal education in Abbeville where he attended the Henry County Training School. On June 14, 1960, James united in holy matrimony to the former Dorothy Jean White in the home of her parents. They first met at the "Creamery" in Denver, Colorado. To this union, three beautiful children, Patricia, James and Bernard were born. They remember their father as loving, caring and a great provider. He had an infectious laugh and was full of life. He was very perceptive and kept current on world events. He was later blessed with nine grandchildren, Liddia, Gershun, Shawmik, Malik, James III, Sage, Tyree, Shamaya and Aspen; and his Seven great children, were an additional source of joy and pride in his life. They lovingly called him "grandpa" and fondly remember all the happy and memorable moments they all shared together. By profession, James was the owner and operator of his own Landscape Company. He was hard working, dependable and performed his duties with precision and excellence. A man of faith and belief in the Lord, James was baptized at an very early age at the Most Holy Church of God in Abbeville. James was a fun loving man who enjoyed life and those he met. In his free time, he enjoyed working in his garden, listening to music and watching movies. He was an avid Denver Bronco fan and an overall sports enthusiast. He loved working in his yard and he had the best lawn in the neighborhood. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful man. To know James was to love him.
