Jackie Darnell Smith was born on June 30, 1956, in Idabel, Oklahoma to his parents, Charles Smith, Sr. and Christine Carter Smith. Christine passed away shortly after his birth and he was raised by his grandparents, Jake and Lizzie Carter. He had four brothers, Charles, Jr., Vernell, Larry, Ronnie, and three sisters, Bonnie, Dorothy, and Jewell. As a child, he enjoyed fishing, roller skating, playing basketball, football, baseball, and he ran track. His siblings remember the day he broke his collar bone because he wanted to fly. This was boys being boys; he was placed in a swing and pushed very high so that he could jump out. It was not a good day for his brothers, Larry and Ronnie but a very bad day for Jackie.
Jackie received his formal education in Oklahoma City, where he attended NW Classen High School. He also attended Central High School in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He met Darlene Boykins while roller skating. Out of this union, a daughter, Sharonda was born. He was later blessed with five grandchildren, who were an additional source of joy and pride to his life.
They all shared many happy and precious moments together, whether it was at family reunions or just having fun together.
Jackie was no stranger to hard-work. He owned and operated a landscaping company. He loved being his own boss and working with his customers. He was loved, respected and admired for the attention to detail of his workmanship.
A man of faith and belief in the Lord, Jackie attended worship service at New Testament Holiness Church under the pastoral leadership of his brother-in-law, Pastor Lee Harris. As a child, he attended Saint John Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Reverend W.K Jackson, Sr. He most recently worshipped at Hope Center under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Ray. He believed in the power of prayer and that everyone needs to have the right relationship with the Lord.
Jackie was a fun-loving man who enjoyed life with those he encircled. In his free time, he continued to watch sports on television and spending quality time with family and friends. His closest friends, Nancy Shay, and Jackie Ross will miss the camaraderie's they all shared together. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful man. To know Jackie was to love him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, a brother, and a sister.
