Hilda Marion Johnson was born on October 25, 1936, in Hampton, Virginia to her parents, Nicholas Rice and Elsie Washington Rice. She was raised surrounded by her brothers, Nicholas, Jr., Ty, Willie, and her sisters, Elizabeth and Henrietta. As a child, she enjoyed styling hair and dancing. She received her formal education in Hampton, Virginia, where she attended Kecoughtan High School.
On August 29, 1959, she united holy matrimony to Phillip Johnson, who was a native of Matthews, Virginia. To this union, Phyllis, Patricia, and Phillip, Jr. were born. She was also the proud mother of two other children, Lawrence and Linda. The family relocated to Denver, Colorado and Hilda became the grandmother of ten grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren who all were an additional source of joy and pride in her life.
By profession, Hilda was employed as a Laundry Service Attendant, she was also employed as a Domestic worker in private homes, as well as a Teacher's Aide. She worked for Denver Public Schools, Reliable Lines, West Co. Fabrics, and Saint Joseph's Hospital. She was hardworking, dedicated, and performed her duties with a spirit of excellence. She retired after many years of service.
Hilda was a fun-loving woman who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she enjoyed dancing, sewing, cooking, and spending quality time with family and friends. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Some of her closest friends include Helen Brickhouse, Don Slay, Mary Hood, Natalie Gove, and Samuel Gove, they all will miss the camaraderie's they shared together and the fact that she was a true and trusted friend.
Hilda Marion Johnson departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on November 18, 2018, in her home in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her loving and devoted husband, Phillip Johnson of Denver; 1 son, Lawrence E. (Marcia) Rice of Aurora; 2 daughters, Linda D. Rice of Denver and Phyllis A. Johnson of Englewood; 1 brother, James O. Rice of Norfolk, Virginia; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
